CHAPTER FOURTEEN
SEVON HUMMED wistfully while unclasping the banana clip from his hair. The wind tugged the blond curls, reaching for the slithering Queen Isabella Causeway and South Padre Island. He dreamily watched the darkened land speckled with lights from the top of the Port Isabel Lighthouse. A chill tiptoed up Sevon’s spine as Jack’s thoughts reminded Sevon he was still present in his mind. Sevon fought to stay still. His throat was raw and dry from his sickness, but he craved Jack’s shifter blood.
Dominic stood to Sevon’s left and watched him. He reached out and stroked Sevon’s soft cheek. Surprised, Sevon bristled at the contact. His gaze shot vengefully to the source before recognizing the confusing gesture of affection from Dominic. Sevon’s gut lurched, wondering if he should be grateful or if this was his moment to end it all.
End it all? Sevon smiled meekly in apology while his thoughts raced. He returned his attention to the vastness of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. Was he really at that point? What would he do? How would he live? What about the kingdom? The allies? He had to think it over. Plan it out more thoroughly. He couldn’t just leave it all behind on a moment’s notice. No matter where, no matter how far, he was certain Dominic would drag him back. He had to wait. Sevon scratched under his eye, discreetly dabbing a tear. If he waited any longer, he would end up dead. He knew it.
Only the growling sound of the turning lighthouse beacon hung between them. And Sevon’s burst of courage was locked away for the time being. His heart thumped slowly in an agonizing, anxious rhythm. He was so close to his moment. His escape. His freedom. But he had to hide it. He was petrified Dominic had heard his thoughts, and Sevon glanced at him to test the theory. His skin tingled with relief—Dominic seemed oblivious.
Sevon sighed, partially from his thoughts remaining his own and partially because he could not yet be free. He addressed the obsidian waters and winking yellow lights instead of the man he so desperately wanted to run away from. “I hate it here,” Sevon muttered.
Dominic leaned against the glassy enclosure of the lantern room. “Come now, you love the lighthouse.”
“I didn’t mean the lighthouse,” Sevon said, leaning on the guardrail. “Darkmore. The kingdom. The city. All of it. I just can’t stand it!” He shook his head and his hair flew like streamers out into the wind. More obscenities were ready on Sevon’s tongue, but he carefully held them back. “I just don’t know what to do. No one will help us recover. There is no food. No sanitary conditions. No safety. The nobles dine on rats and sleep under rickety roofs, while the palace is a fortress.” Sevon slapped the guardrail, and it pealed a humming note. “I’m forced to demoralize myself to hunt the lowest grades of cattle!”
“Now, what have I always told you, Sevon?” Dominic asked. “It’s a waste of energy feeling guilty for your good fortune.
