Chapter 15

Bella Astaire

I barely found space to park my car outside the beach house. When the reporters saw me driving in, they quickly ran toward me. Pushing past them were Detective Ramirez and Detective Gordon. The reporters talked loudly and simultaneously; it was hard to understand what they were saying. Erika looked at me with concern. Fuck, I should have told her about my neighbor before. She shouldn’t have found out this way.

“Dad, why are these people here?”

“Let’s go inside.”

I pulled Erika close and tried to cross the crowd to the door, but Detective Gordon stopped me.

“Mr. Evans, you must come to the station with us.”

“Am I under arrest?”

Detective Ramirez looked at Detective Gordon but didn’t reply.

“Dad, what’s going on? What is this about?”

“Ma’am, I apologize for this disruption, but we must speak to Mr. Evans alone. We cannot discuss details with anyone yet.”

Erika’s eyes widened, “My father is under an investigation?”

I tried to be stoic, but ended up looking at my shoes. It did not sound good, and I did not have enough time to explain it to my daughter.

“Dad, what are they talking about?”

“I’ll tell you when I’m home tonight, but don’t believe the bullshit you hear. Okay?”

Erika nodded, “Call me as soon as you can.”

The reporters closed in on us as I got in the back of the police car, and one asked me,” Mr. Evans, were you and Ms. Astaire lovers? Is that why you killed her?”

“Who is Astaire?”

I looked at the detectives, dumbstruck.

They said nothing.

The ride to the police station was quiet, apart from the radio and the static sounds. The detectives hadn’t spoken until we pulled up at the precinct. Occasionally, they looked at me and grinned with disgust.

“Let’s go!” Detective Ramirez barked when he opened the back door. I had no idea what was going on, but whatever the detectives thought was wrong.

Detective Gordon led me back to the interrogation room, where we had talked previously. Detective Gordon sat across from me, crossed their arms, and bore a somber and impatient expression.

“Now, can you tell me what the hell is going on? “I asked when Detective Gordon closed the door.

“We were hoping you would tell us, Mr. Evans,” Detective Gordon replied.

I sighed and paced around the room, trying to make sense of the situation.

The detectives told me to sit down, but I was restless.

“You can’t just come into my home and harass me without proof. You didn’t even tell me what this is about. Is that even legal?”

Detective Gordon looked bored and yawned.

“You’re either a terrific liar or have nothing to do with these murders. But, I’d wager on the first scenario.”

“MURDERS? As in plural?”

I stopped moving and scanned the officer’s faces for signs of the truth.

“Mr. Evans, what was your relationship with this woman?”

Detective Gordon pulled up a photograph of a woman and raised it for me to examine.

I felt my heart sink, and my limbs felt cold and heavy. The woman they were referring to was the one I chased after the day before.
