Chapter 19

Ash stared as her uncle walked farther into the dining room. Of all the insane things she had seen inside a dream, this was the worst. Tiernan was a dreamwalker. And he used to be on the Committee. She kept learning new secrets that made her wonder how much she really knew about him.

He grinned at Garcia when he saw the cake in her hands, and she returned a much colder smile as she set it on the table.

“Happy birthday to the newest member of our Committee,” Charlotte Brown said warmly. “Here’s to many more years to come.”

Moreau raised his glass of wine. “To Tiernan O’Shea.”

“To Tiernan!” the others echoed with varying degrees of enthusiasm.

“We got what we came for. Can we go now?” Ash said quietly, without considering that maybe she shouldn’t speak. They might be hidden from sight, but she didn’t know if anyone had bothered to hide their voices. Luckily, no one in the dream looked at her. They started cutting the cake, evidently opting for dessert before dinner.

Raisa frowned at her. “What’s wrong?”

“O’Shea,” Cat said. “Is that your uncle?”

Ash nodded wordlessly. She avoided looking at Tiernan, but she could still see him out of the corner of her eye as he got a piece of cake from Garcia.

“Yeah, I think it’s time to go,” Cat said. “We—”

“Did you really think I wouldn’t see this coming?” a voice said from the doorway to the kitchen.

The four of them spun to face a second Robert Knight. The dream version of him still sat at the table, conversing with the others and oblivious to the presence of the uninvited guests, but this one was eight years older and supremely pissed off.

“It’s not what it looks like,” Cat said.

“It’s exactly what it looks like,” Robert snapped. He scowled at Raisa, who for the first time since Ash had met her looked intimidated. “I told you not to go digging, but you just couldn’t listen, could you? And using your mother to do it! That’s a new low, even for you, Catalina.”

Even for you? That was harsh, and yet not surprising. Cat stared at the floor with her jaw clenched.

“It wasn’t Cat’s idea!” TJ said.

“You don’t have to lie to protect your sister,” Robert said sternly. “I’m assuming you all are somewhere nearby. It won’t take long for my people to find you.”

“Get out. Now,” Cat said. A door appeared a few steps away, standing free in the middle of the room. It looked exactly like the front door of the house. She reached for Ash, but before she could make contact, the ground split between them like an earthquake tearing the house in half. Within only a few seconds, they stood on opposite sides of a gaping black chasm, too wide for them to jump. Raisa and Ash on one side, TJ and Cat on the other.

“Time to wake up.” Robert grabbed each of his children by an arm and shoved them through the door Cat had created. Ash
