THIRTY-NINE

Wen, waiting in the shadows, unleashed on the three men, shooting them all before any got off a single shot. She dragged their bodies across the wet pavement and left them piled in the dark alley.

“Come on,” she shouted, “let’s get out of here!”

The rain poured relentlessly. They found a parking garage up the street that was dry, and they took the elevator to an upper level. “Wen likes the high ground,” Chase told Hale.

Hale wanted to talk now, afraid if something happened to him, no one would stop the event. Wen and Chase listened intently, learning the details about the potential terror strike. They asked questions and pressed for more information.

“This false flag,” Hale said. “It’s a dirty bomb.”

“I have a vague idea,” Chase said. “It’s like a mini nuke?”

“A dirty bomb is a mix of conventional explosives and radioactive material. The explosion spreads radiation, contaminating everything in the blast radius,” Wen said, recalling her MSS training. “The long-term effects can be even more devastating. People will suffer from radiation sickness, cancer, and other health problems for years to come.”

“Good summary,” Hale said.

Wen walked towards the open wall of the parking garage, her eyes scanning down into the dark, deserted streets, trying to pick up any movement or signs of danger. The rain eased, noises rising from below, a low murmur that sounded like voices. She tensed, her hand instinctively reaching for her weapon. She turned back to Hale and Chase, who were deep in conversation. “I think I heard something,” she hissed. “I’m going to check it out.”

Chase nodded, his eyes narrowing as he gazed out into the night.

The murmur grew louder as she approached the stairwell, and she could just make out the sound of footsteps. She crouched, trying to remain as low as possible.

Wen spun around and saw two figures emerging from the shadows of the opening, their faces obscured by the darkness. Her hand still tight around her MP7, she was about to fire, but as they got closer, she realized it was just two homeless men, huddled together under a makeshift shelter of plastic sheets, coming in from the storm. She frowned, her hand slowly lowering from her weapon.

“False alarm,” she called out to Hale and Chase, who had stood up and were now watching her with concern. “Just a couple of homeless guys.”

Chase nodded, a look of relief crossing his face.

“We need to keep our focus,” he said, his voice serious. “Figure out how to find that bomb before it’s too late.” He turned back to Hale, who was now sitting on the floor with his head in his hands. “Where is it going to be deployed? Can you give us any information that might help?”

Hale looked up, his eyes tired and haunted. “Wen gave you the basics,” he said, his voice slow. “The material used in a dirty bomb is typically highly radioactive isotopes that emit gamma rays and other high-energy radiation. This poison can travel long distances and penetrate through most barriers, making it extremely dangerous.
