Chapter Sixteen

Diego

Pulling into Sydney’s driveway, the nerves hit full force. I’ve been on edge all day, in a good way, barely able to stand the anticipation of seeing him again and doing more. Now that it’s time, I’m starting to stress. What if I’m not good at any of this and Sydney is disappointed? That will ruin any chance of me hoping for more.

I rub my forehead, praying for the dating confidence I’ve had all my life to reappear. I want to make him happy. Want to make him feel good. Want him to see me as an option. As well as we get along, I’m sure we could make romance work. Getting him to see that, however, is a challenge.

I exit my car and walk up to the front door, ringing the bell.

“It’s open,” Sydney calls out.

I open the glass door and step inside, the smell of something amazing wafting around me.

“In the kitchen,” Sydney says.

I follow the scent, hoping whatever it is, I get to eat it. When I see Sydney, he’s standing over a pot, stirring something inside. He’s wearing a pink apron and dancing to Taylor Swift. He glances in my direction.

“Hey.”

“Hi. What are you up to?”

“Cooking.” He grins. “I haven’t in so long. Like a proper meal, I mean.”

I lean on the island behind him. “What inspired this?”

“I was on a conference call today, and it was so boring, so I started scrolling Instagram and came across this gal who specializes in cooking for two. She was so perky and adorable, but I really liked how she felt…I don’t know…accessible, I guess.”

“Accessible?”

“Yes, it wasn’t this glossy, over-stylized presentation. It was just her cooking in her kitchen. It really appealed to me.” He grins. “I’m making her recipe.”

“What is it? It smells delicious.”

“Tortilla soup.”

“Yum.”

“It’s hearty though. It has chicken and corn in it. I think it’ll be filling. I have avocados, cheese, and tortillas for dipping.”

“Looking forward to it. Can I help with something?”

“Do you want to look at my iPad and see how to do the setup?”

“Sure.”

I twist around, reading the screen but getting distracted by a link at the bottom. I click it on impulse, smiling as the image fills the screen.

“This.”

Sydney turns to look at me. “What?”

“Can you look?”

He walks over, leaning into me. “What is it?”

“This. I can see you doing something like this but catering it to your style and your audience.”

He peers at the screen. It’s a lifestyle page with soft colors and an elegant layout. One of the pictures is showing a man and a woman smiling. The man has a tray of food, and the woman is holding cocktails.

“What do you think?”

Sydney gazes up at me, so close I can feel his breath on my face. There’s a rare flicker of insecurity in his features before he blinks it away.

“You really think so?”

“Yes, but I think you would have more of a flirty vibe. Your energy is exuberant.”

“Exuberant.” He smiles. “That’s a nice word.”

“Accurate. When I saw you tonight, dancing and cooking, yeah, I could see it.
