Chapter 14

ANGELINE had to place a hand to her chest to keep her top from fluttering around and exposing her in the wind. She cursed herself for not wearing a jacket. Her nipples were hard as diamond tips now and probably could easily be seen through the flimsy material of her dress. Maybe she should have tried sexy and sultry on another night—a night when they stayed in, perhaps.

Dylan slid his arm around her waist, and a whole different kind of chill shot through her. He dipped his head near her. His breath warmed her neck, and it breezed past her ear. Her goosebumps now had goosebumps.

“You look amazing. I don’t think I told you that earlier.”

The clincher.

She was about to suggest they hurry to the car and climb into the back seat for a serious make-out fest. Or better yet go back to her house, get a little liquored up, and try to have sex.

“Thank God you’re here!” Selina approached. “Veronica is here, and with the stress and these pregnancy hormones and the fact I’ve never liked her much in the first place, I’m having a hard time not telling her off about the things she called me earlier today at brunch.”

“Dylan!” Nathan stuck out his hand to shake his best friend’s. “I didn’t know you were coming.”

“Yeah.” Dylan patted him on the shoulder. “Congrats, man. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“You were next on my list.” Nathan sheepishly rubbed his neck.

Dylan brushed it off. He leaned down and kissed Selina on the cheek. “Congrats, Selina, you look great.”

“Thank you, Dylan. It is nice to hear.”

Angeline looked at Selina with a combination of amusement and disbelief. Selina was getting misty-eyed. That was not like her sister. Angeline shooed the guys off.

“Buy me a drink?” Nathan motioned toward the door.

“Sure thing.” Dylan turned to look at Angeline.

“We’ll just be a minute,” she promised. Begrudgingly, Dylan followed Nathan inside the club as Angeline dug out a tissue from her purse. “What is wrong with you?”

Selina laughed. “I don’t know. This little devil—” she pointed to her belly, “—has me going insane. I cry all the time at everything. I turned the TV on the other day, and I cried at that old soup commercial.”

“Why?”

Selina wiped at her tears. “I don’t know.”

Angeline couldn’t help herself, she laughed.

“I’m glad you think my misery is so amusing.” Selina threw her hands up. “And oh God, you know what else? Veronica is wearing the same dress I am.” Selina wore a capped-sleeve red dress with a square neckline in a modest length. It looked classy and expensive—two words that had never been used to define Veronica.

“I’m having a hard time believing that.”

“Well, believe it,” Selina said with an edge in her tone. “She actually looks better in it than I do. Come on in and see for yourself.”

Angeline linked her arm with her sister’s and walked with her into Charlotte’s dining room. Charlotte’s was nice, but in her opinion it lacked the flavor The Lounge offered. Charlotte’s was upscale but a bit bland.
