Stella had no idea the time. When she eased out of the bed to go to the bathroom, she only knew that it was still dark outside. Brennan was snoring softly beside her, and he rolled away, claiming the bed with the entirety of his body. She smiled at the sight of him, his wiry frame sprawled haphazardly against the pillow-topped mattress.

She like him there and that surprised her. She hated when a man thought he should spend the night in her bed after a sexual encounter. There had been shame when she had roused a lover and sent him on his way. Now, she hated the thought of Brennan leaving, and she realized that was a conversation to be had when all their bad business was behind them.

With an empty bladder, Stella eased back into the room, settling down against the side of the bed. She had wrapped the length of her hair around her head and slipped on a silk bonnet to protect the strands. She was still thinking about what Brennan had said as they’d fallen off to sleep. Wondering if she had heard him correctly, or if her own wants and wishes had teased their way into her dreams. Because she wanted him to love her, and she wished things between them could always be what they were in that moment. When neither was crazed about their careers and no one was trying to kill her or cause him and his family harm.
