Cameron

THOSE GREEN EYES of hers slay me. I’m already on edge with what’s happened tonight, but now, to have her between my arms, her soft curves pressed against my chest, my resolve is slipping. It feels like this is where she’s supposed to be. It’s like some piece of the puzzle clicking into place. Kennedy was right this afternoon when he said it was too late for me to walk away. It’s not an option for me. I’m not sure it ever was.

Brushing her hair away from her face, my fingers lightly trace over her cheek, ghosting over her freckles. She closes her eyes, leaning into my touch, but I can feel that live wire of tension running through her. A battle raging between wanting to move closer and running as far away from me as she can get.

Given what I know about her bastard of an ex, I can understand her reluctance. I wonder if there’s ever been a man she’s trusted since she left him. Can she make room for someone now that he’s gone? So many fucking questions, but I don’t think I have the right to ask any of them. Instead, I keep my arms around her, letting her make the next move.

I feel her shake her head against my chest before she leans back. “I’m sorry. You’re being so nice, and I’m just—”

“You don’t have to apologize, Sam. Not to me. Not ever. I’ve got no idea what you’ve been through. The fact that you’re still here, playing in the symphony, making sure Hannah’s safe.” Her silky hair brushes over my fingers, and I resist the overwhelming urge to tighten my arms around her. “You’re the strongest person I know.”

She takes a step away from me, shaking her head. “I don’t feel strong. Most days, I’m just hoping I don’t break apart.”

“I’ll hold you together.”

She glares, that protective wall she’s built up slamming firmly into place. “You don’t get it. I don’t want someone to hold me together. I want to do this by myself. I need to. Can you understand that?”

“You have been. Look what you’ve done so far by yourself. That doesn’t mean there aren’t people who want to help you, and it’s okay to accept it. It doesn’t mean you’re not strong.”

Her shoulders slump. “When is this going to stop?” Sam asks, her voice soft, her eyes searching for answers in mine. “When am I going to stop thinking the worst?”

“I don’t—”

“I’m so tired, Cameron.” She wraps her arms around herself. “Always looking over your shoulder, it’s a horrible way to live your life. I’m tired of running all the time. Tired of hearing some random noise and jumping out of my skin. Tired of thinking everything and everyone is a threat. I shouldn’t be afraid of you. Rationally, I know that, but I am. Even though you’ve only been sweet and kind, and a perfect gentleman.” She moves to the French doors that lead to the backyard, looking out to the patio.
