Cameron
THOSE GREEN EYES of hers slay me. Iâm already on edge with whatâs happened tonight, but now, to have her between my arms, her soft curves pressed against my chest, my resolve is slipping. It feels like this is where sheâs supposed to be. Itâs like some piece of the puzzle clicking into place. Kennedy was right this afternoon when he said it was too late for me to walk away. Itâs not an option for me. Iâm not sure it ever was.
Brushing her hair away from her face, my fingers lightly trace over her cheek, ghosting over her freckles. She closes her eyes, leaning into my touch, but I can feel that live wire of tension running through her. A battle raging between wanting to move closer and running as far away from me as she can get.
Given what I know about her bastard of an ex, I can understand her reluctance. I wonder if thereâs ever been a man sheâs trusted since she left him. Can she make room for someone now that heâs gone? So many fucking questions, but I donât think I have the right to ask any of them. Instead, I keep my arms around her, letting her make the next move.
I feel her shake her head against my chest before she leans back. âIâm sorry. Youâre being so nice, and Iâm justââ
âYou donât have to apologize, Sam. Not to me. Not ever. Iâve got no idea what youâve been through. The fact that youâre still here, playing in the symphony, making sure Hannahâs safe.â Her silky hair brushes over my fingers, and I resist the overwhelming urge to tighten my arms around her. âYouâre the strongest person I know.â
She takes a step away from me, shaking her head. âI donât feel strong. Most days, Iâm just hoping I donât break apart.â
âIâll hold you together.â
She glares, that protective wall sheâs built up slamming firmly into place. âYou donât get it. I donât want someone to hold me together. I want to do this by myself. I need to. Can you understand that?â
âYou have been. Look what youâve done so far by yourself. That doesnât mean there arenât people who want to help you, and itâs okay to accept it. It doesnât mean youâre not strong.â
Her shoulders slump. âWhen is this going to stop?â Sam asks, her voice soft, her eyes searching for answers in mine. âWhen am I going to stop thinking the worst?â
âI donâtââ
âIâm so tired, Cameron.â She wraps her arms around herself. âAlways looking over your shoulder, itâs a horrible way to live your life. Iâm tired of running all the time. Tired of hearing some random noise and jumping out of my skin. Tired of thinking everything and everyone is a threat. I shouldnât be afraid of you. Rationally, I know that, but I am. Even though youâve only been sweet and kind, and a perfect gentleman.â She moves to the French doors that lead to the backyard, looking out to the patio.
