Pavlowski wasn’t kidding when he said we’d be entering a war zone. Unlike when I landed by parachute earlier in the day, the battle has intensified during the early evening. Tracer bullets are flying all around us. Bullets speed past our ears and impale themselves at our feet, kicking up the soil.

“Make a run for it,” the art professor insists. “Keep your heads down. Our encampment is only a few meters away. We’ll be safe there.”

We sprint our way to an encampment that is surrounded by several tanks, armored personnel carriers, concrete barriers, and tall metal fencing. The tanks look like they come from Germany while the APCs look American. Thanks, NATO.

Inside the perimeter, there’s a fire going and some food cooking. Several tents have been set up and there must be two dozen armed guards walking both inside and outside the perimeter. Every now and then you hear a burst of gunfire. It’s almost like both sides are firing off round after round, but no one is trying to kill one another. Makes sense when you consider many of the Ukrainians have family living in Russia and vice versa.

Since I’m not used to spending quality time inside a real warzone, I’m not used to sudden, explosive bursts. Neither is Isabelle. The two of us duck on instinct whenever a shot is fired, or an explosion goes off in the near distance. Apparently, this is a funny sight not only for Pavlowski but also for some of the other Ukrainian soldiers mulling about.

The art professor places his hand on my shoulder.

“Don’t worry,” he says. “You’ll get used to it after a while.”

I hear more shots and gaze outside the perimeter. In the dark of night, the tracer bullets look like miniature shooting stars. No, scratch that. Lethal miniature shooting stars, I should say.

“Are you hungry?” Pavlowski says. “There is a stew cooking and plenty of bread. We also have vodka.”

“If it’s all the same to you, Captain,” I say, “I’d like to get going on the Chernobyl Road as soon as possible.”

“I agree with Chase,” Isabelle says. “We’re up against the clock as it is.”

“Okay, we can eat something along the way,” the art professor says. “But first, I must introduce you to the major, and we must get his express permission if we’re going to commission one of our fighting vehicles to go after the cauldron.”

“What if he says no?” I say.

“My guess is he won’t,” Pavlowski says. “But on the off chance he does, Mr. Baker, you and your very attractive partner will be on your own. We’ll provide you with the necessary arms and ammunition, of course.”

“How reassuring,” Isabelle says.

“Follow me,” the Captain says.

Together, the three of us head to a tent located on the opposite side of the compound. Pavlowski pulls open the tent’s canvas door and steps inside.

“Permission to enter, Major Gass,” he says.

“Of course, Pavlowski,” the man seated at a long table says. “I thought you were taking a couple days’ leave?”

“I took a little time for a PR mission, Major,” the art professor explains.
