Wolf howls ricocheted off the castle walls. Shouts sounded from the courtyard and along the battlements. Demetrius stood on the top of the wall, his hair whipping about his face. The frigid wind cut through the fabric of his tunic chilling him to the bone. The damned wolves had come at night and the huge moon in the sky offered him no comfort or power. He held up his hands and called the roots of the great oak tree to reinforce the main gate. He strained under the pressure pushing his magic to its limits. The ground rumbled and shook. Roots burst from the soil below, searching and climbing over the wooden doors and stone walls. Werewolves snapped and snarled at the tree, using teeth and claws to tear at the roots. The tree wouldn’t hold long. Still it would slow them down from breeching the main gate.

Val flew up the wall, meeting Demetrius at the top. “Report,” Demetrius ordered.

His lead knight buzzed his wings in aggravation. “Wolves are attacking from the east. Likely they will try to surround the castle. We’ve secured the drawbridge and the guards are armed and prepared to fight. But, should the werewolves break through the ramparts they will tear us apart. We are nothing more than bugs to be squashed under their claws.”

Demetrius remembered the wolf outside his bedroom window. Damned beast must have been testing him. It knew that their magic was useless at night. “Bloody beasts aren’t as stupid as they look. They knew we would be weak and defenseless against them without the aid of the sun.” Green fey relied on the soil, sun and water to fuel their magic. Even he as a royal with the purest of blood could only call upon so much magic. “Get the archers ready. Until we can restore our magic, we must rely on our weapons and wits to outmaneuver them.”

Demetrius felt the weight of the battle upon his shoulders. “If we can hold them off till sunrise, we can defeat them.” He put his hand on Val’s shoulder. “I must check on the status of our guests and report to my father. Do not attack until I give the orders, but defend as necessary. Understood?”

“Your orders will be followed.” Val bowed his head in a sign of respect and flew away quickly.

Demetrius took to the air, winging his way to the west wing where his parents’ bedchambers were located. His mother stood in the doorway of her bedchamber, a wrinkle marring her lovely brow, while her delicate wings beat a frantic rhythm, causing her body to float a few inches off the floor. “What is it Demetrius? What is happening?”

“We are under attack. I must see Father.”

She waved him through the door. “He is in the sitting room.”

His wings beat a hasty path to the sitting room, which connected his parents’ bedchambers. His father was shouting at his valet to get his clothes and to be quick about it.

Demetrius hovered in the air. No time to set down.
