Third Lake

“You got a layout of this place?” Skip asked.

“A floor plan?” Sam asked. “Of course.” He reached into his shorts and pulled out wet piece of folded up notebook paper. “Right here.”

Skip steered his kayak up next to Sam's and reached for it. “It's wet,” he observed.

“Well, yeah. I fell in the water.”

Skip unfolded the paper. “I can't read any of this. The ink ran all over the place.”

“Huh.”

“Where are we going in?”

“The back door.”

“Can you at least describe it to me?” Skip wadded the paper into a ball and threw it Sam's head.

“It's a two-story log cabin,” Sam explained. “Four bedrooms—three up, one down, two baths, a kitchen, a dining room, and a living room. There's also a large family room with a fireplace. There's a two-level deck on the back, and a one-story porch on the front. The back door opens into the family room. To the left of the door is an open staircase leading to a hallway. The hallway is open to the downstairs. Straight through the family room is the kitchen, the dining room, and one of the bathrooms. To the left of the back door is a doorway to an addition. That's the fourth bedroom—a master bedroom.”

“Thank you, Mr. Photographic Memory,” Skip said snarkily. “Where's the package?”

“Upstairs. The last bedroom down the hall.”

“On the right or left?”

“All of the rooms are on the left. On the right is a railing that overlooks the family room.”

“How sure are you on this intel?”

“As sure as I ever am. After breaching the back door, I'll move up the stairs. You watch the upstairs hallway and the first level from the family room. Anyone comes out of those upstairs bedroom doors, you let 'em have it.”

“What about your guy on the inside?”

“Becker? He's not supposed to be there.”

“How many will be there?”

“With Becker gone, there could be anywhere from three to six combatants.”

“Three to six,” Skip repeated. “Hardly seems fair.”

“Yeah, those poor bastards won't have a chance.”

“What do we do with the package after it's all over?”

“Nothing.”

“Nothing? We're just leaving it there?”

“Did you bring a third kayak? Because, if not, it stays. When the bad guys are eliminated, I make a phone call and someone else comes in to finish up.” Sam pointed across the lake. “See the big log cabin to the right of that boathouse?”

“Yeah. The boathouse part of this?”

“No. That's the neighbor's boathouse, I think, but I was told that the neighbor's camp is unoccupied this week.”

“What about the camp on the other side?”

“It's occupied.”

“So they might hear.”

“But they won't know where it's coming from. You fire a weapon out here, and it's almost impossible to tell where it came from.”

“We hope.”

Halfway across Third Lake, the breeze picked up and a few gray clouds rolled in.

“Did you check the weather?” Skip asked.

“Slight chance of rain between two thirty and four thirty.”

“If it starts raining on the way back, I'm gonna be pissed.”

Sam looked up at the clouds overhead. “Those don't even look like rain clouds.
