East of Dagon Tower Yangon, Myanmar

“We can’t hold them much longer!”

Sweets pointed to a nearby laneway that would continue their southeasterly route. “Take everyone through that alleyway. Continue southeast toward the sewage treatment plant.”

“What about you?” asked Mickey.

Sweets grabbed Red and threw him over his shoulder. “We’ll catch up, now go. That’s an order.”

“You heard the man!” Mickey opened up with his M4, providing suppression fire as the rest of the men, Marines, and flight crew led the civilians, including the wounded woman, across the street and into the alley.

Sweets spotted a flashing neon light for a restaurant not ten feet away. He rushed through the door, startled patrons and staff staring at him wide-eyed as they scattered out of his way. He lay Red on a table then removed his body armor and tore open his shirt. He checked again for a pulse but found none, and immediately began chest compressions, singing the Bee Gees’ Stayin’ Alive in his head to maintain the rhythm.

The gunfire outside continued to fade as the group he was now responsible for made their escape, and he prayed they made it now that they were down two guns.

“Where’s that drone, Control?”

“Sixty seconds, Zero-Nine.”

Sweets turned to those in the restaurant, cowering against the walls. “Does anybody speak English?”

Nobody said anything.

“Please, I need help here!”

A young man stepped forward. “I-I speak English.”

“Good. Do you know CPR?”

The man shook his head.

“Fine.” Sweets jerked his chin toward the street outside. “A drone is going to be landing there in the next few seconds. When the propellers stop moving, I need you to pick it up and bring it inside.”

The man’s eyes bulged. “I-I can’t help you.”

Sweets motioned at his M4. “If anyone asks, tell them I threatened to shoot you all if you didn’t help. Understood?”

The man nodded as the high-pitched whine of the drone cut through the chaos outside.

“Get ready!”

The man rushed to the door, terror written on his face, then darted into the street as the drone set down, its propellers winding to a halt. A moment later the man reappeared with the drone in his hands, struggling with the heavy load.

“Just flip it upside down and get me that red package that’s taped to the bottom.”

The man complied and Sweets put his medical training to use, prepping the Automated External Defibrillator. He pressed the button and Red’s body shook from the jolt, the machine reporting back that it had failed to detect a normal rhythm. Sweets closed his eyes and stared up at the heavens.

Please, God, if one thing goes right today…

The machine signaled another shock and Red gasped. Sweets checked the display and the confirmation of normal sinus rhythm and a weak but strengthening pulse, the O2 stats improving rapidly.

“Control, Zero-Nine. He’s back!”

“Copy that, Zero-Nine. Once he’s stable, let us know so we can guide you out, over.”

“Roger that.” Sweets smacked Red on the face. “Are you with us?”

Red stared up at him. “What the hell happened?”

“You were dead.”

“Cool, and I’m not anymore?”

“I don’t know.
