Stave 3

Scrooge woke up again. He was still in his bedroom, but something was different. Was it the same night? He wondered if another ghost was going to visit soon. A strange red light was coming from the next room. He was nervous, but he got up and went to see what was making the light. As he reached the door, he heard a voice say, “Come in, Ebeneezer Scrooge. Come in.”

Scrooge could not believe what he saw. The walls were covered with green leaves and plants were hanging down from the ceiling. A large fire was burning in the fireplace. The tables and even the floor were covered with plates of food. Cakes, breads, puddings, juicy fruits, all kinds of meats, chestnuts, and huge bowls of punch. And right in the middle was a giant!

The giant was holding a torch. This was the red light that Scrooge had seen. He said, “Come in, come in. I am the Ghost Of Christmas Present.”

Scrooge stepped into the firelight. The giant had a big smile on his face. He was friendly, but Scrooge was still afraid. He did not want to look at the giant.

“Look at me,” the ghost said gently. He was wearing a long, green and white robe. His hair was long and brown. He had holly leaves in his hair.

“The first ghost taught me many lessons,” said Scrooge. “If you are here to teach me, too, then I will follow you.”

“Touch my robe and we will go,” said the giant.
