Chapter 9

Myth 8—Extended Lockdowns Work

In 1969, the seminal moment of the Baby Boomer generation took place as thousands of young people descended on Woodstock, New York, to attend a music festival while rolling around in filthy muck, not taking showers, and engaging in free love. But there is a part of the Woodstock story that always gets left out. It took place during one of the worst flu pandemics of the 20th century. In fact, that strain of flu, known as the Hong Kong flu, which appeared a year earlier, apparently without controversy, killed one hundred thousand Americans at a time when the population numbered two hundred million. Until the Covid crisis, many, even most Americans had no idea that this pandemic ever happened. It didn’t crush the American or global economy; there were no lockdowns or stay-at-home orders.

This is not the Middle Ages and the Black Death we are talking about here. it was merely fifty years ago. These are the people who put a man on the moon. Though science has advanced, the basic understanding of how viruses work remains similar if not unchanged. What was a blip on the cultural landscape then will be the defining moment of a generation now, but how effective was the lockdown? Did it work? Can it be the model we use going forward?

In September of 2020, a document came out called the Great Barrington Declaration. It was a most devastating attack on the efficacy of lockdowns, one that not only called into question the efficacy of the approach, but also denounced the brutal unintended consequences, especially among the poor, that lockdowns create. No punches were pulled as the authors wrote that:

“Coming from both the left and right, and around the world, we have devoted our careers to protecting people. Current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health. The results (to name a few) include lower childhood vaccination rates, worsening cardiovascular disease outcomes, fewer cancer screenings and deteriorating mental health—leading to greater excess mortality in years to come, with the working class and younger members of society carrying the heaviest burden. Keeping students out of school is a grave injustice.

“Keeping these measures in place until a vaccine is available will cause irreparable damage, with the underprivileged disproportionately harmed.”

A few weeks later, it was the World Health Organization coming out to warn against extended lockdowns. Dr. David Nabarro, its special envoy for Covid-19, put it this way, “The only time we believe a lockdown is justified is to buy you time to reorganize, regroup, rebalance your resources, protect your health workers who are exhausted, but by and large, we’d rather not do it.” That sounds a lot like two weeks to flatten the curve. Nabarro also pointed out the rather obvious fact that it is the global poor who suffer most under extended lockdowns.

There are two basic questions to ask regarding the effectiveness and wisdom of widespread lockdowns to combat the virus. First, how many lives did they
