We weren’t ten feet from the bus when the door opened behind us and Ty called out.

“Hey, wait!”

Chris and I turned on our heels to see him standing at one of the entrances, a pair of somethings in his hand.

“Check it out,” he said.

He messed with one of the objects, and a bright beam of light shone down and illuminated a large circle of the parking lot at his feet.

Flashlights.

“These work,” he said. “Found ’em in the emergency locker.”

He hopped down and approached us, handing them over.

“Thanks,” I said, taking one of the flashlights, one made of cheap-looking red plastic.

“This is weird,” said Chris, taking his. “All the lights are off, and our phones. But these work?”

It was strange, but I didn’t want to stand around and try to figure it out.

“I’m gonna get back to Sleeping Beauty,” said Ty. “Be careful out there, guys.”

Chris and I each nodded before turning around and starting our trek.

“You get a feeling that this is a bad idea?” I asked, my eyes on the way ahead.

He let out a snort of a laugh.

“Could be the worst idea,” he said. “Smart thing might just be to stay in the trailer and wait.”

“That assumes the guys in charge know what they’re doing,” I said. “Or have any kind of plan.”

“They have to,” said Chris. “Can you imagine the lawsuits they’d get slammed with if they were to just let this situation go to shit? All it’d take is one injury, or God forbid, someone to get killed. They’d be ruined.”

I looked around at the massive party being thrown by all the different musicians on site. Fires raged here and there, men and women stumbled around drunk and high out of their minds. And there was something different in the air from when we arrived, something that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. There seemed to be almost an animalistic frenzy to the partying, like I was surrounded by cavemen around fires in some kind of ritual dance.

All I wanted was to get out of there as fast as possible.

“I don’t know,” I said to Chris. “Something tells me that if they’ve already let it get to this point they’re not going to have a backup plan.”

“Then what’re you thinking?” he asked. “This place is going to just get more out of control until the cops show up or something?”

“If the cops show up,” I said.

Chris shot me a cockeyed look. “What are you saying?” he asked. “That you don’t think anyone’s going to come to help?”

I couldn’t explain why, but it was exactly that. For some reason, deep down in my gut, I felt like we were alone out here.

Not a good idea to share my paranoia with Chris, however.

“I don’t know,” I said. “Just got a really bad, shitty feeling about all of this.”

He nodded. “You and me both. And I don’t even know what we’re going to do when we find these assholes. Yell at them?”

“Wouldn’t be surprised if they had their villas surrounded by security,” I said.
