Chapter Ten

Kilian woke slowly, his body aching with every movement, and he tried to get his bearings before he revealed to anyone that he was awake. Stephen had taken him. Kilian remembered that. He just didn’t remember why Stephen would've done that. If the demon was strong enough to escape, there was no reason to target Kilian. The binding spell linked Kilian and Stephen, but the demon could leave Stephen’s body behind. Maybe Mia’s spell had locked onto the demon instead of the human host. That would require the demon to drag Kilian along like a pet on a leash.

Kilian’s stomach churned in disgust.

There were no sounds in the immediate vicinity. No rumble of an air conditioner or high-pitched whine of lights. There was no whop-whirl of a fan cooling some adjacent room or faint gurgle of pipes. There was only a heartbeat and the distant sounds of a small town. An occasional car clacked over potholes and a children's cartoon was playing in a not-too-distant house. The oppressive sense of silence that existed at Mia’s base had vanished under the mundane strains of life.

Deciding that he couldn't gather intelligence with his ears, Kilian slowly opened his eyes. Stephen sat cross-legged next to him on the dusty floor. Kilian sneezed, and Stephen's gaze snapped to him.

Kilian leapt to his feet and stretched his talons until they dripped with venom. Maybe Kilian wasn’t a match for a demon, but he would make the creature suffer as much as possible.

“Kilian,” Stephen said in a wounded voice. Kilian hesitated. That tone didn’t sound demonic. On the other hand, demons were famous for whispering sweet words into the ears of listening witches. Being able to hear beyond the veil was, hands down, the most dangerous part of being a witch or banshee. It left a person open to the suave manipulations of demons and ghosts and banished gods roused from sleep by some spell or sacrifice.

Rather than make an accusation or accept a demon’s word, Kilian played for time. “What happened?”

“Mia cast an anti-possession spell and you lit up like a Christmas tree,” Stephen said. But then he hurried to add, “But it wasn’t me. I didn’t possess you. I don’t think a demon can possess a new host without a full blood ceremony. So even if Mia didn’t want to listen to me, she should have considered the basic rules of magic before going all Idi Amin.”

“Who?”

Stephen rolled his eyes. “A dictator in Africa who got caught killing his enemies by turning himself into fireflies and infecting them with malaria and Ebola and a dozen other nasty bugs.”

“So an adze?” While Kilian had never gone up against one, they were a form of African vampire, and he had gone out of his way to study most blood-drinking supernaturals.

“How can you know something as obscure as an adze and not recognize Idi Amin’s name?” Stephen demanded. “Anyway, moving on... Mia cast an anti-possession spell. A strong one. My demon claimed me when I hadn’t done the summoning, so Mia has this irrational fear of my demon changing hosts.
