Chapter 19

Around midnight, we all went to the courtyard to see what surprise Jesse had in store for us. He had told us to dress warmly, so I made sure to wear a hat, gloves, scarf, and coat.

Jesse called my name, and I had to smile when I looked over at him. He looked so cute in a leather jacket that fit snugly around his strong chest and broad shoulders. “Remember when we talked about living life to the fullest?” he asked me.

“Yeah,” I said.

“With all that’s been going on around us, I feel I’ve somewhat lost my passion for adventure. That tumble down the hill today only reminded me.”

“Life is still an adventure,” Fred said. “We’re running from all kinds of enemies!”

“That doesn’t count. I’m talking about a real adventure, one none of us has ever experienced.”

I cocked a brow, intrigued. “What do you have in mind?”

“We need to disconnect from this day-to-day rut we’re stuck in.”

“Okay, then,” I said. “What’s your plan for a little fun?”

He grinned. “Can you please take off your glove on your right hand?”

When I did, without another word, he placed a glittering sapphire ring on my finger.

“It’s beautiful!” Julie gasped. “Is it real?”

Jesse nodded yes and Julie about fainted.

“What’s this?” I asked.

“It’ll stop the witches’ tracking spell. It’s only good for a short time, so we can’t leave for good.”

“We’re leaving the castle?” Julie asked.

He nodded. “Yes. Just a short flight.”

Grant looked at him, puzzled. “A flight?”

Jesse passed an identical ring to everyone, then put one on his own finger. He looked at all of us and smiled. “How about another ride on a gargoyle?”

My eyes lit up, curiosity brewing. “Seriously?”

“Yes.”

“It was kinda scary the first time,” Julie said.

“This time, we’ll be on their backs, with a saddle. Lex and his buddies promised not to do any crazy maneuvers. I promise that we’ll all be quite safe.”

Julie gaped at him. “Ride a gargoyle? Jesse, are you serious?”

“Yes. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

“It would make for a great story,” Grant said. “I can tell the others back home, if they’ll ever talk to me again.”

Julie debated it for a moment. “I guess it’s a little warmer out than usual. I’d love to,” she finally agreed. “As long as your friend doesn’t go all Top Gun on us.”

“He won’t,” Jesse reassured her.

“In that case, I’m in,” Fred chimed in.

Jesse looked at me. “Well?”

“You know I’m going!” I said. “I wouldn’t miss this for the world.”

Right on cue, a group of gargoyles flew overhead, and Jesse waved them into the courtyard. Their wings fluttered, snapping violently, shaking the leaves and branches above our heads as they swooped down toward us. Piercing eyes glared at me. When they landed, they were fitted with special made saddles that fit around them perfectly.

“My gosh. They’re as big as freight cars,” I said, in awe as I stared over at Julie.

Julie blinked. “This is insane,”

“I guess I can cross this off my bucket list,” Fred said.

We laughed.

Another gargoyle, in human form, helped Jesse and me climb up on top of Lex, then tightened a strap over our laps.
