Chapter 19
Around midnight, we all went to the courtyard to see what surprise Jesse had in store for us. He had told us to dress warmly, so I made sure to wear a hat, gloves, scarf, and coat.
Jesse called my name, and I had to smile when I looked over at him. He looked so cute in a leather jacket that fit snugly around his strong chest and broad shoulders. âRemember when we talked about living life to the fullest?â he asked me.
âYeah,â I said.
âWith all thatâs been going on around us, I feel Iâve somewhat lost my passion for adventure. That tumble down the hill today only reminded me.â
âLife is still an adventure,â Fred said. âWeâre running from all kinds of enemies!â
âThat doesnât count. Iâm talking about a real adventure, one none of us has ever experienced.â
I cocked a brow, intrigued. âWhat do you have in mind?â
âWe need to disconnect from this day-to-day rut weâre stuck in.â
âOkay, then,â I said. âWhatâs your plan for a little fun?â
He grinned. âCan you please take off your glove on your right hand?â
When I did, without another word, he placed a glittering sapphire ring on my finger.
âItâs beautiful!â Julie gasped. âIs it real?â
Jesse nodded yes and Julie about fainted.
âWhatâs this?â I asked.
âItâll stop the witchesâ tracking spell. Itâs only good for a short time, so we canât leave for good.â
âWeâre leaving the castle?â Julie asked.
He nodded. âYes. Just a short flight.â
Grant looked at him, puzzled. âA flight?â
Jesse passed an identical ring to everyone, then put one on his own finger. He looked at all of us and smiled. âHow about another ride on a gargoyle?â
My eyes lit up, curiosity brewing. âSeriously?â
âYes.â
âIt was kinda scary the first time,â Julie said.
âThis time, weâll be on their backs, with a saddle. Lex and his buddies promised not to do any crazy maneuvers. I promise that weâll all be quite safe.â
Julie gaped at him. âRide a gargoyle? Jesse, are you serious?â
âYes. Itâs a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.â
âIt would make for a great story,â Grant said. âI can tell the others back home, if theyâll ever talk to me again.â
Julie debated it for a moment. âI guess itâs a little warmer out than usual. Iâd love to,â she finally agreed. âAs long as your friend doesnât go all Top Gun on us.â
âHe wonât,â Jesse reassured her.
âIn that case, Iâm in,â Fred chimed in.
Jesse looked at me. âWell?â
âYou know Iâm going!â I said. âI wouldnât miss this for the world.â
Right on cue, a group of gargoyles flew overhead, and Jesse waved them into the courtyard. Their wings fluttered, snapping violently, shaking the leaves and branches above our heads as they swooped down toward us. Piercing eyes glared at me. When they landed, they were fitted with special made saddles that fit around them perfectly.
âMy gosh. Theyâre as big as freight cars,â I said, in awe as I stared over at Julie.
Julie blinked. âThis is insane,â
âI guess I can cross this off my bucket list,â Fred said.
We laughed.
Another gargoyle, in human form, helped Jesse and me climb up on top of Lex, then tightened a strap over our laps.
