Luke

After Dad finishes packing, I help him carry his luggage downstairs and out to his car. “Did you double check you had everything?”

He nods. “I think so, but I’m sure I’ve forgotten something. Your mom was always so good at making sure we had everything packed when we went on a trip, so I’m sure she’s looking down on me shaking her head at the shitty packing job I did.”

I chuckle as if I could hear her voice in my head, and she’s indeed yelling at Dad for forgetting something basic.

“I’ll text you when I land, and if you have any problems, don’t hesitate to call me. I know asking you to watch your sister is a big request, but I appreciate it and I know Megan does too.”

I wrinkle my nose. “I’m not doing it for Megan.”

“I know,” he murmurs but doesn’t say anything more about her because he knows I can’t stand the woman.

I load the bag in his trunk while Dad hops in the front seat of his Corvette. “Hey, Luke, if you get a chance, will you call Baker and set up a meeting so we can get together to sign all the documents for his trust fund. I want to make sure he has access to all of his money.”

I nod. “I’ll see what I can do.”

“Thanks,” he says softly. “Oh, and the keys to the Escalade are in the house. McKayla’s stroller and car seat are in it, so if you go somewhere it will be more convenient to take that vehicle if you don’t mind driving it.”

“Noted,” I tell him. “Anything else?”

“I wrote her schedule down on a piece of paper and left it on the kitchen counter for you. She’s used to structure, so sticking to her routine will be best.”

“Got it.” It’s not hard to see he’s starting to panic at the thought of leaving McKayla in my care, so I do my best to reassure him. “She’ll be fine. Miley and I have all of this under control. Don’t worry. Just go take care of what you need to.”

He gives me a stiff nod and then tells me goodbye before shutting himself in the car. As his taillights head down the drive, I think about how freaked out I really am about taking care of my sister. I’ve only ever watched her for a few hours at a time in the past—never for a few days—and I am a little worried about making sure I do everything right. Miley really is a comfort for me. She doesn’t realize it, but she’s giving me the confidence that we’ll be able to handle this.

I stuff my hands in my pockets and head back into the house. I find Miley in the kitchen, where she’s already discovered the list my father has left for us. Her green eyes scan the paper, reading through the schedule.

She glances up when she notices I’ve entered the room. “Your dad is a thorough guy.”

She holds the paper out to me and my eyes widen a bit as I read.
