The next week and a half seemed to fly by after that. Idina tested only one more time on the computer and found zero changes in her color-coded scoring. Sullivan didn’t seem too worried about those results.

Instead, they focused on picking apart every aspect of Idina’s life as an Army soldier down to the tiniest detail. What she ate. How she slept. How long. Who she interacted with the most in her unit. What she talked about with her friends and fellow soldiers. How many times a day she thought about emailing back home. How many times a day she thought of her green lights. How frequently she thought about controlling them and what percentage of those thoughts led to quantifiable action. When she’d last cried and how long she’d let herself release emotions that way. When she’d last considered herself particularly flatulent…

Anything Idina could imagine as relevant to her therapy—and plenty of things she would never have considered in an entire lifetime—were touched upon in those first two weeks of seeing Dr. Sullivan for an hour every morning. Despite how insane the questions and how backward Sullivan’s methods felt, Idina increasingly enjoyed their sessions.

She didn’t have any other dreams or visions. Her green lights hardly showed up anymore on a daily basis, except for when she’d taken the psychiatric evaluation test on the computer and during the long afternoons of free time she had entirely to herself. Which was when she broke out her art supplies and let her green lights run the show when it came to filling in the blanks of what she wanted to create.

All in all, Idina was relaxing more and more every day. Having a therapist who didn’t freak out about the first few wayward blasts of glittering green light and who believed the things Idina told her was more refreshing than she ever could’ve anticipated.

She stopped worrying about why Reggie hadn’t replied to her emails. She stopped checking her emails altogether for days at a time. She stopped thinking about how she was supposed to fix the messes she’d previously felt were a little too big for her to handle.

She was already doing the work.
