If she’d been any other woman, I would’ve been sure she was toying with me, playing hard to get. With Mariah, though, it wasn’t a game. When she didn’t show up at eight, I told myself to leave—and, again, I would have if it’d been any other woman. But I waited. Eight-fifteen came and went, then eight-thirty. At eight-thirty-eight, Mariah appeared, hesitantly walking down the dock, toward Castaway. Her steps were slow, like there were weights attached to her ankles.

I was stupid-happy that she’d shown, but I fought to keep the grin off my face. “You’re late.”

She frowned. “I couldn’t decide if I was coming or not. You waited. Thanks.”

I thought about lying and saying that I hadn’t been waiting for her, but I remembered what Dylan said about a woman like Mariah not needing a dumbass like me, and figured maybe I should keep my mouth shut. I reached out to take her hand and help her aboard. The contact sent sizzles straight to my dick, but I ignored it. “Get comfortable. It’ll take us about forty minutes to get to this little cove I know.”

She looked around and finally settled on my beach chair. Pulling her knees up to her chest, she looked nervous.

I struggled to think of something to say to calm her nerves, but I didn’t know what. I didn’t know what I was doing. My brain was telling me to stay away from her, or I was going to get sucked in, just like every other poor sucker who stumbled across his mate. But my bear was screaming at me to close the distance between us. I had overwhelming feelings for the woman who seemed nervous about taking a day off. Or maybe she was nervous about spending that day off with me.

I watched her as I took the boat out of its slip and steered it south. She sat stiffly in the chair, her shoulders tight. She was dressed in a light, gauzy dress, the straps of a bikini showing from underneath, and I wondered if I could get her to loosen up enough to lose the dress.

Halfway to the little cove where I liked to fish, she stood, walked to the front of the boat, shook her arms out, and turned to me. I was watching her intently. She smiled timidly and took a step closer. “Thank you for inviting me today.”

“I’m really glad you came.”

She swallowed loudly as she looked away from me. “So, what’s the plan?”

I shrugged. “I figured I’d start by taking you to the cove. It’s one of my favorite places. Then we could play it by ear. Swimming, lounging in the sun, fishing, grilling lunch if we catch anything. We could have a few beers.” I reached out and tapped the bun atop her head with a finger. “Just a relaxing, no-stress-allowed day.”

With a great sigh, she looked back at me over her shoulder. “I’m not sure I know how to relax.”

“Well, you’re in luck. I’m the local expert.
