Chapter 16

Power coursed through Huon’s veins.

The moment he’d consumed the pill, he’d been hit with a massive influx of essence. More essence than he’d ever cultivated before.

He sat, cross-legged on the ground of his tiny room, eyes shut tight in concentration. Cultivating essence hadn’t required this much concentration since he was a Page. It was all he could do just to hold onto it all. At first, he hadn’t been able to control the flow—he’d lost some of the essence, surging it accidentally.

But he couldn’t let any of it go to waste.

How could such a thing exist?

Strength, speed, stamina, breath… they all pulsed through him wildly. This was nothing like cultivating the essence from a beast’s core—nothing like cultivating unique essence. Where cultivating unique essence felt like being struck by a bolt of lightning, using this pill…

If felt like his core was under attack. There was power, but that power was met equally with pain—mental and physical. Every time his core reached its limit he had to instantly purge the essence else it would bleed into the air.

It took more concentration than when surging every one of his essence types at once while fighting multiple opponents.

He felt some of that essence leave him, too, as he’d been afraid it would. Even now, after what the Devil of the West had put him through, he stole part of all the essence Huon cultivated—the essence from the pill was no exception.

But his core… his core expanded at a rate it never had before. He had never imagined a Knight could even hold onto so much essence at once. This… this felt like something that would have taken him months, maybe even years, to attain by himself.

The captain could have used this pill herself, or the crew could have kept the cores they’d claimed, yet they did this.

For me.

He could have imagined Liona doing something like this for him, but he’d never imagined the captain actually caring about him this much. He supposed he did save her life… but it felt like more than that.

She felt like the first mentor he’d had who actually cared about him.

Slowly, the energy from the pill diminished. The bursts of power became less and less intense, until they stopped altogether.

Huon opened his eyes. He had no idea how much time had passed while in that cultivation trance. He surged stamina and breath, trying to clear his mind, and examined his core.

It was more full than he ever imagined it could be. And I haven’t advanced yet. He wondered if this was how strong Knight Kyla had been.

Huon looked about his room. There were no windows in here, and he could only tell that hours had passed because the candle he’d lit was almost at its wick’s end.

When he stood, the weight in his core almost sent him off balance.

He should probably sleep, but he was bursting with energy. Captain Avery said this would bring him close to advancing—the only problem was, he had no idea how to discern that.
