Thank fuck Cassidy wasn’t here when it happened. She might have been killed or kidnapped. Of course I can’t tell her that yet. For one, I think she’d insist on camping out here on a matter of principle. And then she’d decide I needed her protection. It’s endearing and kinda cute that she wants to protect me, but also mostly pointless. Particularly now that we know we’re dealing with real criminals and not just random losers. Although anyone that thought that didn’t know the market value of the inflatable that was found on the shore. Not the kind of thing you can pick up at the military surplus store. Not the legal kind, anyway.

Whoever they are, they’re gone now. At least for the moment. The tent situation was intended as a diversion while their compatriots picked them up on the beach — some kind of pre-arranged rendezvous, considering we’d confiscated the original boat. Bet that pissed them off.

But we know more than they think because the intention of starting a fire literally fizzled. Thank God, because the grass on the bluff is pretty dry and that could have led to a forest fire. Fucking idiots. I don’t know how to break it to Cass, though, that all her clothes were drenched in gasoline. Pretty much a write-off so in between conversations on what I saw, didn’t see, and twice as much speculation I’m trying to work out how to get her into town to buy new stuff. It really shouldn’t be this hard.

Finally, I just give up on going through channels and walk away. I need to find Cassidy and explain some of this shit. Because I’d bet my last dollar, she’s got her cement trowel out and is putting some of the finishing touches on one of those walls she’s so good at. Did I say I like smart girls? I do, but they’re not easy.

It takes me awhile to track her down, but I finally find her in one of the tents sitting on the edge of a cot and looking forlorn.

“Princess?”

She looks up, startled, and then stands to push me out. “You can’t be in here! No men allowed.”

“But I’m your man. And you’re here.”

She’s stands outside the tent clutching her elbows. “You didn’t bring my things? Does that mean…”

I sigh. I was hoping to delay this bit, at least until I got a kiss. “Your stuff is ruined, baby. They threw gasoline over everything.”

She looks startled. “You mean it wasn’t an accident? I thought the tent just collapsed.”

“No. No accident. They were trying to start a fire as a diversion. The only real victim was our clothing. Which in the scheme of things is better than the alternative, I guess.”

“I guess.” She grimaces, rubbing at her side as if it’s bothering her.

“You hurt yourself, Cass?”

“Hmmm? Oh no, just feeling a little off. Probably just cramps.”

Nothing will get a man to change the conversation faster than talk about a woman’s… um, you know, that stuff. I’m no better.
