Chapter Eleven

The inside of the building was dark enough that Paul risked waiting a fraction longer so that he could see who stepped inside ... not that he thought he would be able to see much anyway. With the door held open about half an inch, he could see that there was some sort of floodlight on the outside of the building, and he thought that maybe it had switched on automatically when the person outside had walked into range of a motion sensor. The thought made him glad that he and Harrington hadn’t risked a peek outside.

The man silhouetted in the doorway seemed to be one of the gate guards, and Paul hoped he was merely doing his rounds rather than responding to some sort of silent alarm. The guard didn’t seem to have a weapon drawn, nor did he look like he was expecting any trouble.

For several long moments the guard simply stood facing the almost dark interior of the building. To Paul it felt like he was staring straight across at the door Paul was hiding behind. Even though Paul knew the likelihood of being spotted was virtually zero, the thought didn’t help slow his accelerating heart rate, nor did it stop the bead of perspiration he could feel sliding down between his shoulder blades.

As he watched the guard, silently willing the man to go back to his gatehouse, it occurred to Paul that the guard might even be wondering about the purpose of this newly constructed building, let alone the other strange aspects of the operation. Paul hoped so.

Finally the guard turned to leave, but then suddenly paused, turning back to once more seemingly look across to where Paul was hidden. After a few long moments the guard shrugged, stepped outside, and closed the door.

Paul let his breath escape as quietly as possible. He watched for another minute and eventually saw the level of light coming in through the windows high above the doorway diminish a little. He guessed that was because of the outdoor floodlight switching off, and at least that potentially indicated nobody was moving around outside the door any more.

He heaved another silent sigh of relief and then after glancing behind him at the top of the ladder to memorize its exact location, he eased the door shut and made sure it latched. He was now standing in pitch darkness again. Without even waiting for his eyes to adjust, as he knew from coming up the ladder that there was no point waiting for something that wasn’t going to happen, he gingerly slid one foot towards where he figured the edge of the floor was. Once he felt the toe of his boot was slightly over the edge, he pulled that foot back a little and then brought his other foot closer to the edge.

It was nerve-wracking trying to find the ladder in the dark but he didn’t want to risk any light. Making sure he felt centered in his balance, he reached out a hand to where his memory told him the ladder would be.
