Cernunnos growled. He’d heard more than enough. As the accusation was flung at the golden-haired woman, a lightning bolt of pure agony seared through him. Her own family had disowned her—for a sin she had not committed!

It was enough, more than enough, to warrant his rage—enough to step in and save her. For he knew her with everything he had. He knew her. She was not of these people, but one of his own. His woman. As if carved from his true, secret desires. Such a woman did not belong with these men, that village, or that family. No, she belonged with him, and he wasn’t leaving without her.

But not before he illustrated what hurting his woman meant.

With the mere flicker of a thought, Cernunnos made himself suddenly appear, literally popping into thin air right before the men. Even as he caught their shocked disbelief at his sudden appearance, his mouth was opening and he was roaring.

The sound was thunderous, full of red-blooded anger, and only he and Eiros knew that that ravaged noise was more than anger, for a touch of fear was apparent to his ears, indicated by the pounding of his heart.

The men scrambled back in a flurry of limbs and gasps, one shouting his name, another visibly frozen in place. His limbs were trembling, and the scent of fear in the air was unmistakable. Not dampening his power, Cernunnos let it roar forth in a crescendo of wrath as he spelled out clearly in a voice riven with thunder, “This woman is under my protection. Leave her be or you will face the consequences. You know what I am capable of—heed my warning.”

He knew he didn’t need to spell it out, not when all their eyes were now riveted upon the bone antlers sticking out of his head. However, he wanted one of them to buck against his constraints, wanted an excuse to turn their lives into dust. The roaring in his blood demanded vengeance for the way they had treated his woman. But he was also conscious that he was visible to the golden-haired beauty behind him, and he had to walk a fine line between his natural bestial instincts and his human ones. He also did not want to lower his standards to match these human filth. But as he stared at them, willing them to do his bidding, one of the men had other ideas.

Tall and muscled, a dark-haired man brandished his dagger from the belt at his side and waved it threateningly at Cernunnos, his face twisted in a sneer of disgust. “Why should we listen to you?” he spat. “You are just as tainted as she is. You slept with one of our own—it is against the bounds of nature!”

Cernunnos couldn’t stop the snarl that erupted from deep within his very being. “We did no such thing! And even if we had, it is no business of yours. Who are you to cast blame?” Cernunnos looked him up and down, his lip peeling back in distaste.
