RAVEN

* * *

‘I can’t believe you did this,’ I say, as we sit in a piazza drinking cappuccinos. ‘I mean… Venice! I’ve always wanted to come here… It’s so romantic.’

‘The fact that one day it might sink without a trace makes it even more romantic, don’t you think?’ says Marley, looking out over the water.

I frown. ‘You find disappearing without a trace romantic?’

Marley’s beautiful brown eyes look back at me. ‘No. I find making the most of an opportunity before it’s too late romantic.’

I nod.

‘So… on that note,’ Marley says, ‘what do you fancy doing today? There’s a couple of churches I’d like to see. And then a gondola ride, of course. Maybe see an opera. Go to an art gallery…’

‘All that stuff sounds amazing,’ I say. ‘But we’ve only got one day here, so we should probably prioritise.’

‘Unless you want to change our flights… book an extra night at the hotel? Marley asks. ‘You did say you’d booked an extra day off work, didn’t you?’

‘Oh my god,’ I say. ‘Yes please. I’d love to.’

‘Leave it to me,’ Marley says. ‘Why don’t you order us some kind of incredible Italian brunch while I go and make some calls?’

‘You don’t know this about me yet,’ I tell Marley, ‘but Italian food is actually my favourite. I’m learning to cook all sorts of Italian dishes in my spare time.

‘Well in that case,’ Marley replies. ‘You’d better order as many dishes as you can. For research. Don’t worry… I’m paying.’

She takes her phone out of her pocket and walks across the square, and I watch her go in her powder-blue rain mac and sensible shoes, thinking how good she looks in everything. I’ve now seen her in a strappy red number, work gear, holiday gear, and even baggy grey sweatpants, and it doesn’t matter what she’s wearing — she always looks incredible. It’s funny, though. Even after all this time that I’ve known Marley, I’ve never seen her naked. I’ve imagined it a few times though…

While Marley’s gone, I order us all kinds of things to try. Salamis, cheeses, Galani alias Chiacchiere, tramezzini, bignè alla crema… I don’t even know what all of that stuff is.

Just as the food arrives at the table, so does Marley. ‘It’s all sorted,’ she says. ‘We’ll be staying somewhere lovely tonight and will go back tomorrow evening.’

‘Thank you so much,’ I tell her. ‘I feel so lucky. I mean, it’s not even a real wedding, but we still get a real little honeymoon.’

‘I know it was a bit last-minute,’ Marley says. ‘Flying us out here at 5 a.m. and having so little time to explore. But… it’s a good way to get to know each other, and… decompress.’

‘Yes,’ I say. ‘Decompress. I like that.’

‘Although: I’m not going to lie. Every time one of us says about the wedding not being real, it feels kind of sad. I mean, something about yesterday afternoon felt so weirdly real, didn’t it?’

‘Especially with my friends there. And then the party afterwards.’ Last night we had drinks and food and went dancing together.
