Lunch was a sombre meal with Panda trying to sober up, Rollo exuding rage, and Luna and Trina feeling like their fun-filled morning was forever ago. The afternoon in the studio wasn’t much better. Trina played bongos, tambourine, and several shakers to each track they’d recorded so far, and finally Rollo told them to leave him alone for the evening while he started the mixes.

Luna thought about trying to talk to him, but Trina talked her out of it. And she was right, Luna decided. There was no discussing anything with the man while he was still so angry. So they tried on a dozen outfits each before finally settling on their look for their night on the town. They even talked Panda into coming along after he’d slept most of the afternoon on the couch in the studio.

Sonny was waiting with the Humber at eight o’clock as they’d arranged. The sun had long set, but the air was still very warm and humid, tempered only by the steady breeze off the water. If Luna hadn’t spent much of the summer in America, where everywhere she went seemed to be sweltering hot, then the Cayman Islands’ climate would have been stifling. Now acclimatised away from the chill English weather, she found the evening pleasant.

It was not surprising they’d missed Sonny's Soggy Wreck Bar on the drive to the beach earlier in the day. Blending in with the local flora, the place was little more than a long shack, open on both sides. Stools lined the front and rear facing bars, and the small stage sat under a palapa off to one side. The place was already busy and buzzing with chatter and laughter as offbeat rhythmic music played over the speakers.

“That’s reggae!” Trina enthused as they walked towards the makeshift building. “Crazy percussion sounds. It’s the latest thing out of Jamaica.”

“I’m surprised you’ve heard it before,” Sonny shouted to be heard. The barman came straight over and the two men greeted each other. Luna noticed Sonny’s accent was much stronger when he spoke with other locals.

“What you want to drink?” he asked, turning back to the girls.

“Something local,” Luna said, and Trina gave him a thumbs-up.

“Whatever you drink, man,” Panda said, more interested in the local women looking at the newcomers.

Sonny nodded, smiled, then relayed their order to the bartender.

“Run a tab and I’ll settle with you at the end of the evening,” Luna told him when he’d finished ordering.

“Not a chance,” Sonny replied. “My bar, my rules. If you play, you don’t pay.” He nodded towards the stage.

“We didn’t bring any instruments,” Luna said.

Trina pointed to the little stage where there wasn’t a drum kit, but a variety of percussion instruments, including congas, bongos, and a kettledrum.

“I’m in heaven,” she grinned.

“We got guitars for you,” Sonny assured Luna. “We’ll start jamming soon. Once Clement get here.”

“Who’s Clement?” Trina asked.

Sonny grinned again. “He’s da black music on dis island. You want to groove, den he da man.”

Panda leaned in closer to Sonny.
