Chapter 25: Ginny’s Confession

“What do you mean, he’s gone?”

Ginny stared at Marigold hard, trying to comprehend her words. Her maid sat on the edge of her bed, while Ginny curled her knees to her chest as if for support.

Marigold took a deep breath. “By all rumors, King Hector has gone mad. He burned many of his own knights at the stake, and would have done the same to Rion—I even heard that Rion was his primary target. But your boy escaped, and fled for his life, along with many of the rest of the knights of Tryferos.”

“But… he’s the king’s son-in-law, or soon to be! He’s the hero of Tryferos!”

“Which is likely the whole problem,” Marigold agreed. “Remember the rumors that the Tryferian prophet of Aleph named Enmai anointed someone else to become king in his place? King Hector has been paranoid of anyone he perceived to be a possible threat to his power. Rumor had it that he suspected his commander Borno before this.”

Ginny trembled, regretting yet again that she’d been so hasty to burn the lock of Rion’s hair. If only she could scry him now! “But… where could he go?”

Marigold shrugged. “If we could guess that, then so could Hector.”

Suddenly Ginny knew exactly where he had gone—the only place he possibly could have gone, where he could expect that Hector’s men would refuse to follow. She set her jaw.

“I’ll find him,” she declared.

Marigold’s eyebrows shot up. “To what end, Highness?”

“To—I don’t know! Help him, if I can. He must be devastated!” She leapt out of bed and tugged a brush through her long tangled tresses, though it got snagged in her impatience. Marigold gently took it from her trembling gloved hand and brushed her hair for her.

“At least everyone knows I’m not sick anymore, so I can take Snowflake openly,” she muttered to herself. She could see Marigold frowning at her in the mirror. “What?” she snapped.

Her maid pursed her lips. “I still think it would not be wise to draw too much attention to your sudden strength and fitness. Armenwald suspects—”

“Armenwald already knows,” Ginny said shortly, tugging one glove off with her teeth as she always did before a bath. “He can’t prove it, though.”

“My lady,” said Marigold sharply, spinning Ginny around to face her, “if they discover that you do indeed still cycle when we have sworn you do not, it is my life on the line!”

For a few seconds of blinding desperation, Ginny was sorely tempted to slam all of her magic into Marigold, and make her believe the lie. She didn’t even know if that was possible, though—at least not in any lasting way. Not without stealing something of Marigold’s and continuing to exert her power upon her maid at a distance, without ever letting up, not for a single moment…

The very idea of this exhausted and depressed Ginny. With a heavy sigh, she buried her face in her now ungloved hands.

“I’ll be careful,” she promised instead. “I won’t draw any unnecessary attention to myself.
