Chapter Eleven

Jarod Cage’s place was the polar opposite of Viv’s. With the exception of her bedroom.

He had family portraits, awards, artifacts from his travel, art, all over the place. And the books? Holy heck, the books. Classics and mysteries, tons of biographies and nonfiction accounts of almost every American war in history. He had his own freaking library.

She poked around while he went to the kitchen to warm up their dinner. There was nothing temporary about this place. She envied him that.

He brought out some wine—a very nice Pinot, Viv noted—and paired it with some kind of shrimp dish and biscuits. Viv felt her butt expanding just looking at it.

Jarod set it all down in front of her.

“That looks amazing,” she said, inhaling the spicy scent of the shrimp. “What is it?”

“This?” Jarod looked confused. “You’ve never had shrimp and grits before?”

“Sorry, no.”

“Oh, my poor deprived little Yank. This is the ultimate comfort food. I usually have it for breakfast, but it works anytime. It’s insane with the wine. Mrs. B always makes up a batch for me during the season. It’s my ritual the night before we head out. Once we’re on the road, I try to eat pretty clean, and I don’t drink. But the night before is like goddamn Mardi Gras.”

“Just keep in mind not all of us are getting behind the wheel and shedding weight,” she warned. “I read that you lose close to ten pounds during each race.”

“My record is seventeen. Then again, I have a lot more nervous energy than most. And I hardly think you have anything to worry about.”

Jarod dished up their servings. He took a huge scoop from Viv’s bowl and put it up to her lips.

He was right. It was comfort food with a warm, spicy blanket of flavor that had her shoveling it in hand over fist.

Jarod ate slowly, taking in the highlights from last year’s race, and she watched with increased interest as the drama unfolded on the track.

The number six car was trailing the number five, bumping it from behind. The five straightened out and started to pull away. Jarod groaned, and she felt a little ache in her stomach. This was his life, and it was scary as heck.

The six moved a lane over and inched up toward the five, until it could ride it into the wall. Sparks flew everywhere, and a few other cars got caught up in it all. The six car cut off the number five, causing him to spin out. His rear end was hit by one of the passing cars. The ambulance raced to the side of the track. Number six sped away, while the five sat there totaled.

The driver got out of the car, limping pretty badly. It was a miracle he could walk.

“Whoa,” Viv said.

“No shit,” Jarod agreed. “It was a rough day at the track.”

The video cut to a shot of a beautiful brunette storming up to the platform of the racers’ wives.

“What’s going on here?” Viv asked.
