CHAPTER Seventeen
“Kai, are you alright?” Michelle stopped restocking the wine glasses and looked at Kai with concern.
"Sure, why do you ask?" Kai replied.
Michelle gave her a quizzical look and reached past her and picked up a bottle of whiskey, "Because you just stocked whiskey where the rums go."
Kai looked at the shelf she had been stocking for the last several minutes and realized she'd made several mistakes. "Damn it! Sorry. My bad. I'll fix it."
Michelle leaned against the bar and watched her boss and friend carefully. They'd worked together for four years and Michelle had always known Kai to be highly efficient, a stickler for details and laser-focused on her job. Tonight Kai had made several mistakes, dropped a few glasses and seemed jumpy. "Are you really okay? I can call Joanie to come in. We kept her on standby when we heard about your ankle. You seem a little off tonight."
Kai tensed and her jaw clenched. At first it looked as though she were going to get angry, but she paused and took a deep breath, "Thanks, Michelle. Why don't you text her. It’s not my ankle, but I'm distracted. With Cassie singing we can't have me screwing stuff up. I'll bar back tonight instead."
Michelle said, "I've got Lisa bar backing tonight. Why don't you just dazzle the ladies with your wit and charm and jump in when things get hairy? Is everything okay?"
Kai was grateful for Michelle's initiative and forethought but she wasn’t prepared to discuss Dani with her yet. "I'm fine, Michelle. I just have a lot on my mind tonight. Thanks, though." Kai corrected her stocking error and then double-checked the kegs she'd loaded earlier. Joanie arrived within half an hour of Michelle's text.
Kai grabbed a cup of coffee and retreated to her office behind the bar. Closing the door, she pulled her phone out of her pocket and texted Melly, "Are they here yet?" She sat on the small leather sofa and put her feet up on the coffee table.
She felt her phone vibrate. "They just arrived."
Kai knew Melly's talk and tours took about a half an hour. She leaned her head back, but then had a thought. She texted Melly again. "Let me know when you get to the roof. I'll meet her there, if that's okay."
A few seconds later, she received, "No problem."
Now Kai closed her eyes for a few moments and tried to figure out why she was so nervous about Dani coming tonight. Granted she had never invited anyone to the Siren before, but she just couldn't help but be nervous. Kai was certain Dani would enjoy it. What wasn't to like? There was a restaurant and bar that converted to a club after nine, private library, guest rooms, spa and gym with a pool all under one roof, just for lesbians. So why was Kai nervous? Melly's words came back to her. This was Kai offering a piece of herself to Dani. There was the risk of rejection. But Kai knew she was nervous, not about rejection, but about connection.
