CHAPTER 13

JESSIE

Before the news breaks, Tate insists we go somewhere while I’m still anonymous to talk everything through. He spends five straight minutes checking my helmet is on correctly and then he sits me on his motorcycle. “I can get a car if you’d rather?”

“Tate, I’m fine. I love riding motorcycles.”

“I know but you might be…”

He doesn’t say the word pregnant but we’re both thinking it.

“How long until you can take the test?”

“About a month.”

He smiles. “About a month and we’ll know. Perhaps I should call the driver.”

“Tate, it’s been one day. Stop fussing. If I am, I’m less than one day pregnant.”

He nods and jumps in front of me on the motorcycle. “I’ll go slow,” he says. “Are you ready?”

The engine roars as Tate revs the motorcycle, the vibrations thrilling me. I cling to him, the wind tousling our hair as we speed through the city lights. I let out a squeal as he pushes the bike to go faster and I tighten my grip around him, loving the scent of his leather jacket mixed with his woody cologne. It’s exhilarating.

The cool breeze and the temporary freedom of the ride is comforting until I remember what is ahead of me. My mom has Macy overnight and tomorrow, I am putting in a leave at the job I have loved for the past two years to step into my new, temporary life. I had a quick conversation with Skyla and she and Logan are allowing me to take a temporary leave of absence while I help out Tate. Our fake dating would impose too much unwanted media to the resort, so we all agreed that me taking a step back for a while or until the Dinky deal goes through is the best option for everyone. Logan actually thanked me for helping out his brother. My daughter is a lucky girl to be a part of this family.

The rational part of my brain is telling me that I should scream no and run for the hills, but the other part of me feels like I have to help him. I may have had no part in whipping Tate’s clothes away and filming his very naked, very lovely butt, but I did construct some questionable memes over the years, and now I feel incredibly guilty having been his number one social media troll and adversary. My guilt is so massive that last night I got in a fight with a troll on a fan site. They said Tate was washed up and I got so angry and threatened to hunt them down, make “merchandise” with their profile picture and send it viral—which actually garnered a lot of support from Tate’s real fans.

I owe him my help.

Love him or hate him, he’s Macy’s father.

And it’s just a matter of time before the press gets word of him being her father and then Macy and I will be fair game to the paps anyway—at least by posing as his girlfriend for a while, I’ll have Tate’s protection until the media loses interest in us.
