NATASHA

This time, I managed to get out of work earlier. Just after 2pm, I was taking the highway to Grodzisk. I was in a great mood which was rare for me when visiting Beata. But this time, both the lack of traffic and the beautiful weather made me feel like singing aloud. Maybe I would take Beata and the kids for pizza? Or ice cream? Robert should be at work till at least four, so we’ll be back on time.

I texted Beata. As soon as I parked under the apartment block, she exited the stairwell with the kids, looking around hesitantly.

“Come on, Robert works till four, right?” I grabbed her by the waist, pulling her to the car.

“Yeah. But he’ll be mad...”

I stopped midway. I didn’t want my idea to make Beata nervous.

“We don’t have to go. I can order pizza and we can eat it at home.” I looked at the kids who were running around the car, excited. “And I’ll buy ice cream there.” I gestured at the nearby corner store. “The kids will have fun, too.”

Beata shook her head. “No. You had a great idea. The kids finished school with good grades, and, uh, Tymek is an honor student.” She smiled. “It’d great to celebrate with pizza and ice cream.”

“Then jump in. There’s no point in wasting time.” I opened the car door and made sure the whole team fastened their seatbelts.

Suddenly, a thought crossed my mind. “Shouldn’t Ola have a car seat?”

Beata waved her hand. “I guess so, but it’s not far. I think the seatbelts are enough.”

I looked at the little girl in the back seat again, a wave of nausea washing over me.

“No!” I shook my head. “Out of the car. We’re going on foot.”

The children were a little fussy but got out eventually. As we marched to the pizza parlor, Beata whispered in my ear, “You’re definitely paranoid.”

I frowned, thinking. Too bad I wasn’t sooner.

A few minutes later, we were sitting at a large wooden table in the restaurant’s patio. Beata and I waited for the kids to stop arguing about pizza toppings before placing an order.

I asked Beata about the children’s current interests — even before the summer holidays, I wanted to buy them some presents. Then I figured she also deserved something nice. However, I knew that what she needed the most — freedom — was still out of my reach.

“You’re limping less, aren’t you?” I asked about her leg as usual.

“You noticed, huh?” Beata smiled happily. “Yeah, even the doctor says it’s getting better. You know, I guess it’s because I’ve been exercising hard at home, twice a day.”

“That’s great.” I patted her on the hand. “Have you been thinking about taking a vacation? I know about Tymek’s camp, but maybe you could go somewhere together, I mean, you and the kids? I could arrange something.”

Beata frowned. “I’m not going anywhere with Robert because it’s an even bigger nightmare than living with him. Traveling, being in a new place — it’s stressful for him and even more for me.
