“He certainly sounds like a lawyer,” Ellie whispered.

“From what I heard, he was a pretty good one,” Mayor Montgomery replied.

“What happened?”

The mayor shook his head.

Jessie kept her fists clenched at her sides. She wanted nothing more than to put a bullet through Fred Clarence’s head just like she’d done to his horrible brother.

Otis looked at the two young men, then back at the justice. “Are William Doyle and Billy Doyle guilty of disorderly conduct resulting in the death of Samuel Harvey? You’re damn right they are. They came into town without following the law and checking their guns. They were part of a scuffle that got out of hand. So, yes. That charge is correct. They’ve also served way more than the sentence of 72 hours locked up in jail. As for the charge of murder, there is no indication that a murder was committed. A homicide is simply death by another person, which was what was on the coroner’s report, and also goes along with the charge of disorderly conduct resulting in death. A murder is planned. It’s intentional. It’s violent. What happened inside the Cattleman’s Saloon wasn’t planned. It wasn’t intentional. And it wasn’t violent. William and Billy Doyle didn’t murder Samuel Harvey, but because Sheriff Clarence knew who they were…at one time in their lives, he changed the charges to murder in order to hang them for their past.”

“You’re wrong!” Sheriff Clarence yelled.

“Sheriff,” the justice warned.

“They killed Samuel Harvey, and they deserve what’s coming to them,” the sheriff growled.
