Detox

Castle Rock High was stunned when they learned that a kid named Murphy had overdosed over the Thanksgiving break. News spread around the school fast, and when it hit Luke’s ears, he let it pass through to the other side.

Couldn’t hold his pills, he thought.

Needless to say, Luke was a shit head if you hadn’t figured that part out yet.

He sat in his bathroom stall waiting and no one came, so he just shrugged it off as the first bell of the day rang. There’s always between first and second.

He went about his business. He was high by the time he got into the band hall to find it to be very somber. He entered the percussion room and saw his drumline members moping.

“Hey guys,” said Luke.

“Hey,” said Tony.

“Guess you guys heard about Murphy? Horrible.”

“Yeah.”

Luke had gone to great lengths to keep his identity secret. Not even his own section knew who The Medicine Man was, but the rumors were starting to get a bit too widespread around school for him.

“Fuck The Medicine Man,” said Tony. “And Fuck Murphy for being so stupid.”

It was time for Luke to disappear as The Medicine Man.

If the guys know about the name, then the rest of the school does by now, and the principles will be on the lookout.

“I’ll be back guys, left something in my car,” said Luke.

Luke went out to his car and hid his stash under a car seat. He expected drug dogs to be coming through for sure. And they did, by second period they were roaming the halls and coming into classrooms searching.

Steven better keep his mouth shut, he thought. And Oliver for that matter.

Luke sat at the lunch table with Oliver, Seth, and Ashley. While the three Niners were talking about music, Luke was preoccupied with the fact that he hadn’t had any pills since the morning. Then Steven decided to come and take a seat with them.

“Hey there, Luke,” said Steven. “Thanks for those drumming tips you gave me over the break.”

It took Luke a beat to realize what was happening. “No problem,” he said. “I need to go to my car real fast.”

“I’ll go with you,” said Steven.

“I’ll be okay by myself, but thank you, Steven.”

“I had some more questions on something.”

“Fine,” said Luke wanting to get it over with.

Luke and Steven walked towards the entrance of the school. When they were out of range of everyone, Luke said, “What do you want?”

“You know what I want.”

“Well, do you have money?”

“No. But I have information.”

Luke stopped in his tracks. “You wouldn’t sell out your dealer, now, would you?”

“Well, if my dealer was smart, he would give me what I want.”

Luke was smart. He started to deduct the money that he would be losing if he gave Steven what he wanted.

“No,” said Luke and he continued walking.
