Chapter 25

“Why didn’t you just let go?” Sasha chastised me as she and my other wives came into view. Ant chitin laid all around me, as well as some coins and iron ore.

“Thought I’d be able to pull it free before the damn thing died. As you can see, I was wrong,” I said with a grunt of pain.

Why couldn’t a class that was designed to take damage have a passive skill to reduce pain? If there was some intelligent being designing this system, he was definitely an asshole.

After a few healing spells, I was back on my feet just in time to hear Kelsea cry out, “Ooh, finders keepers!” She held a small sapphire amulet in her hand that was shaped like a beetle. Evidently, her intelligence was high enough to identify it because she started smugly explaining its effects. “This little piece of jewelry-”

Sasha cut her off and pulled an identical piece of jewelry out from a fold within her dress. It was blue, and didn’t match the black outfit, so of course she kept it hidden. “Boosts magical damage by 10%? Yeah, that’s old news. I found one months ago.”

Kelsea’s jaw dropped, then she stuck out her tongue. “Well, aren’t you just so lucky,” she grumbled.

After kicking through the loot a bit more, the only other item of value we found was a small vial of experience pills. They were always nice to have, but at our levels, the lowest rank pills were nearly useless. Sometime soon, we needed to give Johnny one of Li’s more advanced pills.

For the next few hours, we progressed smoothly. Moles and apes were enemies we’d fought before, so, just like the ants, we dispatched them easily and only found difficulty in the final battle.

The boss of the mole wing was simple, but not as easy as it might sound.

Once we stepped into the center of the room, moles poured out of the walls in droves. A dozen spawned every second and charged in at us for nearly five minutes. A lot of our attacks killed the little bastards in a single hit, but they spawned so quickly we could barely keep up. Without skills like Whirlwind, or Vera’s Explosive Shot, we would have had a much harder time.

It quickly became clear that we couldn’t just put together five randomly selected adventurers and send them in here. If they were short on heals, had no ranged damage, or only used single-target attacks, they simply wouldn’t make it.

It might even be a good idea to send Shareese in every day just to keep people in line. If they grew overconfident and died, that was a large amount of time and resources wasted.

The bonobos weren’t much harder, but when they were accompanied by a gigantecus, everything changed. The giants had such high strength that I would usually do anything I could to just get out of their way. In such a cramped tunnel, that wasn’t possible.

My shield was suddenly my most valuable item and
