Chapter 10

The smile on my face widened as I took in the sight of Olivia standing there in the dim, near-darkness of the dining hall. She was more rumpled than I’d ever seen her, and for once, her hair was actually down around her shoulders instead of up in a ponytail.

Her hair was longer than I’d thought, and it fell down just past her shoulder blades. It looked like the color of butter in the dim light, and it made her look softer than usual.

Maybe that was just what seeing someone in their pajamas did.

She was dressed in a pair of yoga shorts and a t-shirt that advertised a Pilates studio, and it was a far cry from how put together she usually looked. But it made her look more human. It was strange to think about.

Olivia had been doing a lot of things lately that made me see her as a full-dimensional person, and I felt a little bad for thinking less of her when we’d first met.

She hadn’t been in the best state at that time, and I knew that now and could appreciate how hard she’d been trying. She’d just broken her leg, and she was hiding the fact she had a debilitating illness from the rest of us.

She’d had no way of knowing if she’d actually be able to make insulin, so getting sent to Tullia with the rest of us had probably seemed like a certifiable death sentence.

It must have been awful having to hear us all talk about how we were going to make it and thrive and that everything would be okay when she was operating under an entirely different set of rules the whole damn time.

It gave me a new appreciation for her, just like everything else she’d done since then.

“You’re staring,” Olivia said, and I was quickly shaken from my stupor and offered her another sheepish grin.

“Sorry,” I said. “Didn’t mean to stare. I was just thinking that this is the first time I’ve ever seen you like, really look relaxed.”

“I wear something like this to sleep every night,” she said like it was obvious, and she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and brought one of her shoulders up in a small shrug.

“It’s not a bad thing,” I said quickly. “It’s nice, actually. I don’t know. I’m being weird, I’m making this weird.”

Olivia quirked her lips into a small smile, but she didn’t argue the point.

It wasn’t just how comfortable and dressed down she looked that I was thinking about. I hadn’t been able to get the kiss we’d shared out of my mind since it had happened.

It was only earlier in the day, but it felt like it might have been a century ago with everything that had happened and everything we’d done in the meantime.

My eyes flicked down to her lips for a split second against my better judgment, and when my eyes snapped back up to her face, I saw Olivia staring at me with the same intensity I’d been looking at her the whole time.
