Oliver looks right at me. “So what did you do?”

“Yeah, Bastian, what did you do?” I ask.

Of course all eyes are now on him like anyone could remotely believe that he was the one behind this. “Because they… were targeting me, Andras possibly… dropped the barrier to the main house,” he says, immediately giving away all my secrets!

Oliver’s eyes sweep back over to me. “You did what?”

I shrug but struggle to hold his scrutinizing eyes. “They’re dicks.” My excuse sounds weak and even a little quiet because I know there’s absolutely no way Oliver’s going to let me get away with this.

“Of course you did.”

“But Bastian and I are going to use this as an excuse to get in there and snoop around Reinhold’s room where we will hopefully find the book. Please just stay in the library where you’ll be nice and safe,” I say.

Oliver is clearly not pleased. “Absolutely not. I’m going with you. Roman, stay here and protect the Casters who are counting on you.”

Roman looks very displeased.

“I mean, if Roman does want to run off and singlehandedly take on Anika to pop her head off, I won’t complain,” I admit. “I might even give you a pat on the back and your very own gold star. I’ll even let you keep her head as a trophy!”

Roman looks even more displeased. Why does he have to be so unreasonably picky?

“What’s going on?” Dr. Ness asks as he walks over to see what we’re up to. It seems like while we were gone there was more dividing happening. I have to guess that Dr. Ness deemed our group the better one to be with—as long as he doesn’t hear what we’re talking about—but then where did the remaining faculty and teachers go? Did they all stick with Benjamin and Anika?

“Do you know how many are in the main building?” I ask curiously.

“Probably fifteen? Maybe a few more,” Dr. Ness answers. “There were a few juniors who tried going with them, but last I saw, they weren’t admitted back.”

“Doesn’t seem surprising at all.”

“Is Fran still with them?” Oliver asks.

“Last time I checked on her, she was awake but wouldn’t engage with anyone,” Dr. Ness says. “I assessed her and didn’t feel like anything was wrong, but I also don’t have the knack for telling when people are possessed like Bastian can. She’s eating fine and watches TV, but she doesn’t do anything else and definitely didn’t respond to any questions they asked her.”

Oliver glances at the main house. “I’ll try to see if we can speak to her,” he says. “Please don’t let anyone in. If someone wants to come into the library, quarantine them or something until Bastian and An—and Chase get back.”

“Okay,” Roman says. “Don’t end up dead or something; that will inconvenience me.”

Oliver grins at that. “Of course not.”

“Hell no, I’m definitely making sure you die before me,” I tell Roman. “No way in hell I’m dying first.”

“I wasn’t talking to you. You can fuck off,” he growls.
