Sammy was frustrated with Rourke, as well as the entire situation at hand. He hadnât asked for this to happen, and Rourke trying to take his mind off of everything just made it worse. He knew Rourke was trying to help, but Sammy didnât want the help right now; he wanted to feel sorry for himself and this hell heâd been thrown into. Heâd just been starting to get his life back together again; was thinking of how to get out of that damned dead end pizza job, and now he felt like he was all the way back to square one, but worse. To Sammy this felt like being kicked while he was down, like things getting worse after he didnât think they could, like his father kicking him out after his grandmother died.
Inhaling a shaky breath, Sammy tried to focus on the task at hand. He needed to try and find Luna, but it was hard to see through the tears that blurred his vision and threatened to fall from his eyes. âItâs all right,â Rourke said next to him, and Sammy realized at some point Rourke had tugged him closer, letting go of his hand in favor of wrapping his arm around Sammyâs shoulders. âYouâve been through a lot. Again, Iâm sorry. Iâm not very good at dealing with this sort of thing. Never have been. When I was little I would try to run away from my emotions instead of facing them. It wasnât fair to try and make you face yours.â
âItâs okay.â Sammy wiped his eyes with his hand, wrapping his other arm around Rourkeâs waist. Despite only knowing him for a little while, Sammy felt really comfortable around Rourke and surprisingly welcomed the friendly affection. âI canât see you running away from anything though. Not you.â
Rourke was quiet a moment, eyes scanning the field for where Luna could have gone off to. Sammy watched him, the look on his face pensive. âThere is a lot you donât know about me, Sammy. Iâm here because I ran away.â
âWeâre here because Luna ran off and we have to find her.â Sammy chuckled, feeling a little better with every step they took. He was still upset, scared, and worried, but he knew â somehow, he knew â that he was going to be okay in the end. He just needed to work through everything and learn to adapt. It was the one thing he was good at.
âI didnât mean here right now.â Rourke frowned. Taking a deep breath, he turned to look at Sammy, his eyes full of sorrow and regret. âI was with others. Molly. Aetius. Lysha. We were planning to travel to the Last City together, and I just couldnât do it. Aetius wanted me to continue down a path I no longer felt I could walk, and instead of trying to deal with that, I left. I took what was mine, and I walked away. Been on my own ever since.â
âSounds like a pretty big decision, if you ask me.
