Chapter 9

A soulmate is someone who has locks that fit our keys, and keys to fit our locks. When we feel safe enough to open the locks, our truest selves step out and we can be completely and honestly who we are; we can be loved for who we are and not who we’re pretending to be. Each unveils the best part of each other. No matter what else goes wrong around us, with that one person we’re safe in our own paradise.

Audrey

September 12th, 1998

Brenna and Sophie held up a sheet so I couldn’t be seen as we walked through the Great Room. They whispered to me that every seat was taken. It appeared that everyone was here.

After putting me in a corner of the kitchen so Boomer couldn’t see me, I took off the robe and Clair texted Slade that it was time.

“Hey,” I muttered to the women around me. “Don’t you all know that ‘nobody puts Baby in a corner’?”

Everyone cracked up at my words.

“Time for me to take the stage, my ladies,” Brenna smarted off to us as she bowed, twirling her right hand in a downward flourishing motion.

The quiet laughter continued as she took her leave of us. We all listened as she started to gently strum her guitar.

“Audrey?”

“Hmm,” I replied looking at Clair.

“Do you want to try to stand the entire time or do you want to sit in the chair some?”

I pondered on her question for a moment, yet I knew realistically I probably needed to sit down during the first song and while I was singing my song. If not, I would be standing for three songs in a row, then through our vows as well.

“I’ll sit when I go out during Brenna’s first song, then mine.”

She nodded to me as Slade walked into the room. As he made his way toward me, his mouth dropped open and his expression was one of shocked awe. His eyes roamed up and down me, over and over, almost as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

“Sweet heaven. Dad’s going to totally flip out when he sees you. Damn, Mom. You’re freaking gorgeous,” he uttered, shock still apparent in his voice.

I frowned at him. “Hey, I’ve never been chopped liver, you know.”

“I know, Mom, it’s just well...” He raised his hand and swung it up and down. “He hasn’t seen you look like this since he got here, and it’s been years since I have.”

I smiled up at him and saw the tears shining in his eyes.

“God, Mom,” he began as a tear slid down his face, “it’s so good to see you looking like this again. Healthy, beautiful, absolutely breathtaking.”

I reached up and wiped the tear from his face.

“I love you, Slade,” I whispered to him.

“I love you, more,” he whispered back to me.

“From now,” my words were spoken so low only he could hear them.

“Until forevermore,” came his reply.

“It’s time, Audrey,” Clair stated.

When Slade held out his left arm to me, I reached and grabbed him right above his elbow.
