Yes, unfortunately. There is much more to the game of craps for those brave souls who are willing to do a bit of digging. But let me say right up front that 90 percent of everything else about craps is crap. We can delve a little deeper into how to wring a bit more value out of your pass line bet, and there are a few other reasonably lucrative bets on the table—but trust me, the rest of the game is garbage.

UNBELIEVABLY TRUE FREE ODDS

Remember back in chapter 1 where I explained how the casino makes its money thanks to the house edge? Simply put, it’s by paying you less than what the odds of the bet say they should pay. So if the odds are 5 to 1 of something happening, the casino will pay you only 4 to 1. But there is one, and only one, bet in the entire casino that, believe it or not, will pay you true odds, exactly as you should get paid; the casino makes no money on the wager whatsoever, and it’s the only bet where the odds aren’t against you. And that’s the free-odds bet in craps.

Not surprisingly, you won’t see the free-odds bet written anywhere on the layout, and you won’t usually hear the casino staff encouraging you to take it, but smart gamblers know it’s there and know how to play it.
