Chapter 15

Zen

Rage is seething from every pore on Dom’s body by the time we leave the diner. He’s interpreting this entire disaster as his own personal failure to be a strong leader to our clan. No one is more critical of Dom’s performance as Alpha, than the man himself. Kai and I have been on the phone for the last hour trying to find any connections to the hospital, with varying degrees of success. His college friend is on vacation for three more days, but promised to find out as soon as he returned.

Scrolling through my contact lists, I pass through the names of quarterbacks, short stops and centers, but no one who can help us get into a mental hospital and rescue our mate. She must be terrified. The idea of her being locked up and mistreated is killing me. Three more phone calls, and I’m down to X, Y and Z on my list.

I tap the contact information on a client of mine who is a Law Enforcement Officer with the State Highway Patrol. He has two full sleeves of my work on his arms. We’ve spent at least forty-five hours together in my shop while I tattoo him with pieces pulled from the pages of Greek Mythology. I know I’m asking quite a bit, but I’m out of options. The phone rings twice and he answers, succinctly with his last name, “Zambino.”

“Anthony! Hey, man. It’s Zen. How’s it going?”

His tone changes from business to casual in a heartbeat, “It’s all good. Are you calling to schedule the Kraken piece?”

“We can definitely do that, but I need a favor, too. You can tell me to fuck off it’s too much, yeah?”

“Anything for you, brother.”

“I’m not sure where to begin here. Did you hear about that manhunt in the mountains a few days ago? College girl on some kind of project disappeared?” I’ll leave out the suicide part.

“Of course. Funny you should mention that. She’s disappeared again. Escaped from a locked facility. I’m at a roadblock out on the County Line. They think she’s headed back to the mountains where she went missing in the first place.”

“No fucking way! Dom! Turn around. No! Right now! Go back! When did she disappear?” Dom makes a U-turn in the middle of the road, causing three cars to swerve and all of them to honk and give him the finger.

“Security video shows her sneaking into a utility room. She hid in the dirty laundry. Stole her mom’s Lincoln from the parking lot. The onboard computer on the car says she’s headed south. Mind if I ask how you know this girl?”

“Dude, we met in the woods. My brothers and I took care of her the night she was lost. I swear, she was just lost. She wasn’t trying to off herself.”

He whistles, “That changes the whole situation. Her parents and the teacher said she was suicidal. You didn’t hear any of this from me, ok?”

“Of course not, and when you come see me, the Kraken is on the house.
