It wasn’t long before they headed back out to join the others.

“There has to be an explanation for this,” Darla insisted as she walked beside Sarah, touching her friend on the shoulder. “You and I both know Isaac is no killer.”

“Then who in this group would have done it?” Sarah asked, looking sadly at Darla. “That’s the problem here. Other than your parents, I know all these people really well myself, and I can’t imagine any of them doing this. And don’t get me wrong—I’m not saying that either of your parents is to blame, but someone here is guilty. Can you imagine one of your parents doing this?”

“No,” Darla said firmly despite some of her past grievances with them.

Sarah cleared her throat. “Forgive me for saying this because I consider you a friend, but are you sure? You haven’t really known your father all that long. Are you sure it couldn’t be him?”

“He’d have no reason to kill her,” Darla insisted. “I’m sure of that.”

“Well, someone in your group did,” Sarah said. “We just have to figure out who.”

“Someone had to have somehow snuck onto the golf course without being seen by anyone or have been caught on camera,” Darla said. “Maybe it was someone who knew where the cameras are located and knew how to stay off them.”

“That’s an interesting idea, but I don’t think it’s likely. You would have to be very familiar with the course to know where all the cameras are,” Sarah said.

“I guess that is true,” Darla said.

“And I take it that Isaac isn’t familiar with the course, and of course, if he’s innocent, he would have no reason to dodge the cameras,” Sarah said. “So right now, we need to figure out why Isaac wasn’t on that video.”

“He said he was out this way, but he clearly wasn’t,” Darla started.

“That means we need to figure out where he really was and why he would lie about it,” Sarah said. “But for now, let’s talk to Tamara. She said she was over by the double moat, right?”

“Yeah,” Darla said as they started walking again toward the golf crew.

Tamara and Isaac were still standing off to the side, talking quietly to one another and both looking quite worried about the ordeal they now found themselves in. Darla could tell that her friends were trying to play it cool, but they were not doing a very good job of that at the moment.

As Darla and Sarah drew close to where her friends were, Darla noticed her father standing and heading toward them. “Darla, has your officer friend found anything out?” he asked, stopping at Tamara and Isaac.

“Not quite,” Sarah said quickly before Darla could comment about what they had learned at the country club.

Reggie sighed. “Is there anything I can do to help?”

“Not right now,” Sarah said. “We’re just trying to get a picture of where everyone went after you all got separated. It’s the only chance we have to rule out suspects and find out what happened.
