CHAPTER THIRTEEN

THE TOWER OF THE SUN

AND THE OLD WAYS

We managed to get to the top of the Spine just after midday, on day number one hundred and one, and I have to say that I was rather disappointed. The view was spectacular but there were only six huts there and not even a small store or anything. There was a well-traveled footpath that led away from the huts out toward a higher peak toward the North.

Once everyone was there, I asked Arth how his feet were doing and he said that they were fine now that Malisa had put a poultice on them and wrapped them in oily wrappings. One of the locals came out of one of the huts and headed along the pathway that led to the Northern peak, until he saw us.

He came to us as we were dismounting and asked if we were here to pray to the Storm gods or Giant gods. Arth spoke up and asked, “Is there a shrine to the god Stronmaus here?” “No, but there is one for his father, Annam, the god of all giants, in the Tower of The Sun, back in the Hall of Heroes, if that would do.”

“Sure, sure that would do just fine if you could show us the way.” “Well, you will have to leave your animals here, in the corral, where they will be taken care of until your return. I’ll show you, follow me.” With that, he turned and walked toward the far side of the huts and we followed leading our mounts.

There was a large corral on the Eastern side of the huts where we unsaddled and unharnessed all the animals and left the cart just outside the corral. We followed the man back to the pathway and then along it to a huge set of oaken plank doors with silver strap bandings with iron studding’s.

Arth and his father could have stood on each other’s shoulders and still been able to walk through those doors without bending. They were the largest doors I have ever seen. They must have been made for the giants who are rumored to have resided here about and come here to pray to their gods.

We were led into the mountain through those doors and inside was even more cavernous than one could have imagined. Torches burned along the walls of the cavern and huge candelabra hung from chains toward the center about a hundred feet from the floor.

The light emanating from them was much too bright to have been mere candles so they must have used oil lamps for the light. About eighty feet in, all along the walls stood marvelous life-sized statues of giants that stood anywhere from fifteen feet to twenty-five feet tall.

Each one was intricately carved and ornately adorned with the actual swords, war hammers, axes and weaponry they must have carried in life and dressed in their armor, hide or clothing befitting their station in life.

This was a fantastic and living history book
