Let’s face it, a baby or toddler’s room is more about the look you like than what they prefer. Because this stage passes quickest of all, it’s not a great idea to go wild with expensive furnishings or decorative treatments. Usually the furnishings are functional: a crib for sleeping, a changing table, and maybe a rocking chair or other seating. Wall art is usually the most powerful decoration in the room. You can go a bit wild with your color choices because you’ll be changing the color scheme in short order. A lot of homeowners like to add stencils or other wall designs; wall decals are an even better choice. You can find a huge selection of decals online, and most are inexpensive. Many of these can be reused, and all are easy to remove when it comes time to redecorate.

The closet and other storage areas are key in the toddler’s room. It’s wise to set up the closet with modest hanging storage and lots and lots of shelving. Bins and boxes will come in handy for all the odds and ends that go along with tending to a younger child or infant. If there is no closet, or closet space is being used for something else, you might want to look at a shelf-and-bin storage unit for storing everything from baby clothes to picture books in one place. I urge people to buy nicer storage units—such as real wood shelves and wicker baskets—that will still be appropriate for the child as he or she grows.
