Later that night, McQueen found himself lookingout at a herd of sleeping tractors. “Mater,” he said,“I’m not doing this.”

“Oh, c’mon,” Mater urged, “you’ll love it!Tractor tipping’s fun! When I say go, we go. Butdon’t let Frank catch you. Go!” Mater took off.

“Whoa!” McQueen cried. “Wha-who-who-who’s Frank?” He peeled off after the tow truck.“Mater. Wait, Mater!”

“’Kay, here’s what you do,” Mater explained ashe arrived at the bottom of the hill where the tractorsstood sleeping. “You just sneak up in front of ’emand then honk, and they do the rest. Watch this.”Slowly and quietly. Mater drove up to a tractor.

Honk!

The tractor startled awake. It let out a low moan

as it very slowly started tipping over. A puff ofsmoke burst from its exhaust pipe.

Mater cracked up. “I swear, tractors are sodumb!” he cried gleefully. He snuck up on anotherone and honked, then laughed as it tipped over. “Idon’t care who you are, that’s funny right there. Oh,your turn, bud!”

“Mater, I can’t,” McQueen said. “I don’t evenhave a horn.”

“Baby!” Mater teased. Then he started imitatinga chicken. “Bwak, bock, bock, bock!”

“Fine, stop, stop, okay?” McQueen sighed. “Allright. I’ll do something.” He drove up to a sleepingtractor and revved his engine.

The roar was so loud that the whole field oftractors startled awake. With a group moan, they alltipped over.

McQueen and Mater laughed.

Suddenly, there was a strange whine, and in amoment, a giant tractor combine appeared. Bladeswhirling, he lunged at them like an angry bull.

“That’s Frank!” Mater shouted, whipping around.

McQueen took off after the tow truck.

“Run! Run!” Mater Jiollered, laughing hisbumper off. “Old Frank’s gonna catch you! Run!He’s gonna get you!”

McQueen didn’t know why Mater was laughing;that combine was big and angry! Frank closed inbehind as they tore toward an opening in the fence. They made it through the hole just in time and racedonto the open road as fast as their wheels couldcarry them.

“I haven’t seen Frank that excited aboutsomethin’ since the last time he was excited aboutsomethin’,” Mater said as he and McQueen madetheir way back to town. “Must’ve been your redbumper. Tomorrow night we can go and look for theghost light.”

“I can’t wait, Mater,” McQueen said sarcastically.

“Oh, boy, you gotta admit that was fu-un,” Matersaid happily. “Well, we better get you back to theimpound lot.”

“Um, you know,” McQueen said awkwardly,“actually, Sally’s gonna let me stay at the motel.”

“Oh . . . getting cozy at the Cone, is we?” Materteased, arriving at the motel’s parking lot.

‘‘You’re in love with Miss Sally.”

“No, I’m not,” McQueen said. “No way.”

‘'Way. You’re in love with Miss Sally.” Materturned his teasing into a singsong. “You’re in lovewith Miss Sally.” The tow truck turned around andstarted driving backward, taunting the race car. “Youlove ’er, you love ’er, you love ’er, you love ’er—”

“Will you stop that?” McQueen said.

“Stop what?” Mater asked.

“That driving backwards stuff,” McQueen saidwith a shudder. “It’s creepin’ me out. You’re goingto wreck or something.”

“Wreck? Shoot, I’m the world’s best backwardsdriver. You just watch this right here, lover boy.”With a whoop. Mater peeled out backward andwove between the Cozy Cone’s traffic cone guestrooms.
