Part Three

The Battle

According to Tracey and David, between two and three dozen ex-Corps frequented B8. They traveled in groups of five to ten when herding Domestics. Diamond hoped that meant they could pick off the soldiers in waves. If they all returned at once, it was almost certain the bunker would be overwhelmed.

Python had finally healed enough to attend the war room meetings. He sat now at the big table, shaking his head as he studied the map.

“We’ve set up traps along the two choke points leading up the ridge. We have explosives with remote detonation, all wired to my laptop,” Glitch drew a line down the map along the explosives’ path.

A hiss of static cut through the room, followed by a man’s voice. “Connor to Outpost Command. Do you read me?”

Diamond looked at the control panel beneath the wall of monitors. A red light was blinking on a small transceiver. “Shit. I didn’t consider radios.” She looked over at David and Tracey. “Did you know?”

Tracey shook her head. “Domestics weren’t allowed in here.”

“Howell? Do you read me? Over.”

Glitch glanced at the radio. “Think we can fool them?”

Python shook his head. “I doubt it. The best we can hope for is them thinking the equipment malfunctioned, or the guards are sleepin’ on the job.”

Sal walked over to inspect the monitors. “We don’t have a visual yet. I don’t know what sort of range these radios have. We’re gonna need to get our defenses ready.”

Diamond realized they were all looking at her, waiting for her to give the go-ahead. “We need eyes on the security cameras 24/7 from here on out. Glitch, keep your laptop close in case we need to use that remote detonator. Python, you take the first shift watching the monitors. Sal, take David and gather a small crew for reconnaissance. We need to find out how many of them are coming for us.”

Tracey pushed back her chair and stood. “What about me?”

“I need you to make sure all the residents are outfitted. I need everyone prepared but not panicked.”

“Damnit, Howell, come in!” the voice growled from the speaker.

“Johnson, do you read? Over.”

When she fled, she’d taken the radio with her to listen in on communications. She hadn’t considered that her superior officer would try to contact her directly.

“I know it was you who cut down the body, Johnson.”

Her hand twitched. Part of her wanted to explain herself. To try and make him understand that she couldn’t do it. She couldn’t walk past the body of that little girl every day and convince herself what she was doing was right.

“You’re a damn fine soldier, Johnson. If you surrender yourself now and report back to base, we’ll go easy on you. You have my word.”

Her finger pressed the button. It would be so easy to go back. She had a life in the Corps. She was respected. There was food, water and shelter. If she didn’t go back, she’d be on the run forever.

But if she went back,
