I drove into the gulf-side town of Bonita Springs, Florida, on a mission. My mother’s people were from here, a gorgeous surfside Eden about fifteen miles outside of Naples that had a lot in common with where I grew up. Like Charleston, this place seemed to thrive on tourism. People flocked to the Gulf of Mexico like they flocked to the Low Country, hoping to find a piece of that elusive beach lifestyle to call their own. Also like Charleston, Bonita Springs had a lot to offer in the way of dining, entertainment, and just awe-inspiring beauty. As I pulled to a stop in front of the house Will shared with his dad right up until the day of the older man’s death, I kicked myself for not coming here sooner. This place seemed amazing, even if my reasons for being here were decidedly not.

“I can’t believe I got to go on one of these,” Oyster said, beaming in the passenger seat beside me and rubbing his hands together like he was kid getting ready to tear into a bag of his favorite candy. “Oyster is on the case, a real-life police case.”

“Calm down, and stop talking about yourself in the third person,” I said, smiling a little at how excited my cousin seemed to be. “This isn’t even officially part of the case. Walter told me to take a day or two to be with the family after we found out the truth about Will. Well, that and I got tossed out of Jeff’s truck like a pinball running through a machine. So, he probably figures I deserve the break.”

“Not that you’re taking it,” Oyster said.

“I can’t just sit back and do nothing,” I replied, taking a deep breath and looking at the house we’d just pulled up in front of. “You see what this is doing to everyone, what it’s doing to Mandy.”

“She’s messed up, and I can’t blame her,” Oyster said. “I can’t even imagine what she’s going through right now.”

“I can,” I said quickly and without question. “And I can tell you that the only thing that’s going to help her at this point is putting an end to it. Will needs to be brought in.”

“Well, I doubt you’re going to find him back down here,” Oyster said. “Everything seems to be happening back up in the Low Country.”

“Oh, I’m not trying to find him. Kay is up there. I have no doubt that if he can be found, she’ll do it,” I said. “I’m looking for answers. When Will is brought to justice, it’s only going to be the beginning of the end. Questions about his motives will haunt Mandy until she can make sense of them. I don’t want that for her. So, I’m going to find those answers and bring them back to her. That’s why I’m here.”

“Why we’re here,” Oyster corrected me, nudging my shoulder.

“Right,” I said, shaking my head. “I appreciate your coming with me, Oyster. I know you’re excited about
