Prologue

I knew that coming back here was going to be hard. I knew that I was going to have to answer for a lot. I knew that people were going to judge and whisper behind my back, but to be honest, that was nothing new for Carmel Springs. The town’s life source had always been gossiping, and I couldn’t see that ever changing. Small towns really were a different creature from the big cities.

However, ten years later, it was time to come back. It was time to quit running and regretting. When I’d left Carmel Springs, it really had been to experience something more. While I had loved my family, friends, and life, I had wanted to see what was out there. I had wanted to experience college and all its traditions. I had wanted to experience new jobs and all the knowledge gained from those new jobs. I had wanted to be able to have choices. The plan had been to be able to choose my life, rather than take the life that had been chosen for me. I shook my head at how naïve I’d been. Nobody got to plan their lives; that’s not how it worked.

Being raised in a small town, religion had also played a huge part in my upbringing, and I couldn’t count how many times I’d heard about ‘God’s plan’ for people. Whenever anything huge had happened in Carmel Springs, everyone had chalked it up to God’s plan. Everything happened for a reason, and it happened because God had deemed it so for whatever reason He saw fit. It hadn’t taken me long to fall in line with that belief after leaving home at eighteen.

Over the years, I’d been tested, and I’d like to say that I had passed each one of those tests successfully. Some with grace, some with tears, some with anger, some with determination, but I had still passed them all.

However, now, I was going to be faced with the biggest test of my life. After ten years of trying to find the right fit, I was back home, wondering why I’d ever left to begin with. My family had always been in Carmel Springs, and as I’d gotten older, I’d begun to realize just how much family meant, and just how important it was to have them around you when life was happening. As cheesy as it sounded, I wanted lifelong family memories for me and my kids. I wanted to give them what my parents had given me, and I couldn’t do that living five states away.

So, I was back in Carmel Springs, landing a good job with Dr. Lucas Trenten as one of his medical secretaries. He owned his own practice, and he’d been in need of some extra help right around the same time that I had decided that it was finally time to go home.

While it had taken a while to make the arrangements and move back to Carmel Springs, now that I was back, it was beginning to feel like I’d never left.
