If it isn’t dragon magic, like Gale seems to suspect... I guess that there are few other races who could have made this, fae being one of the two possibilities, the others being witches.

I put my hands to the barrier, sending a slight shock of electricity over the barrier, but as soon as it hits the walls, it bounces back to my hands and I quickly pull my hands back when I’m about to get a spark from it. Okay... Interesting. It really does keep elemental magic out, dragon, witch or fae, elemental magic can’t get in.

Lapis is the one who answers Gale’s question. “Why wouldn’t it be? It’s here, it has to be dragon magic. Who else could have magicked it?”

I look around. “How long has the rest of the library been hidden? Longer or shorter than that this area has been closed off?”

“Much shorter.” Agate shrugs. “Like I said, this area has been closed off for as long as I know, the library has only been hidden two or three decades, you lose track of time after a while.”

Sophia seems to catch onto Gale’s line of thinking at the same time as I do. She lets out a slight sound of frustration. “That means anyone could have magicked it, not just dragons.”

Lapis frowns. “But who would come here voluntarily in the last century? It’s just us dragons.”

“Not true.” Sophia shakes her head tersely. “Some witches do. My father came here. He lived here for a while. And we’ve always had some witches living in this town. We don’t pay attention to it because they are elementalists, like us.”

It doesn’t escape my notice that she calls the dragons ‘us’ now, when she’s previously acted like she wasn’t really a dragon because she can’t transform and only is a half dragon.

“So there isn’t much of a difference between the two groups. Not before we had access to the antidote, anyway. Now, sure, it’s different, but it hasn’t been that different for most of the last decade.”

“Why would witches...” Lapis shrugs, stepping back. “It doesn’t make sense. Who else would do it?”

“None of it makes sense.” Sophia’s voice is little over a whisper. “That’s the problem.”

Before I even know why I ask it, the question slips out of me. “Have fae ever kidnapped witches? Any of them?”

Sophia, Lapis and Agate all shake their heads, and it’s Sophia who answers. “Not as far as we know. It’s why so many are involved with the rebels, they’re a little safer when they try to cross the border or travel from place to place.”

Lapis makes a disbelieving sound. “Unless they recognise your accent as being from around here, or you’re wearing something that makes them think that you’re from a dragon area and not from the fae lands or the werewolf lands. Then they will kill you, just like they do dragons. Then you’re no safer than a dragon.” Her voice is so factual, but this is their reality, this is the world she’s always lived in.
