Chapter Nine

Wonder: to have a wish or desire to know something or to place in doubt or express doubtful speculation

"My mom says the food at the restaurant I am taking you to is to die for."

"And what restaurant might that be?"

"It's some restaurant inside the Firebrand hotel."

Riley was right, Jordan did almost die. Her brain rapidly tried to figure out a way out. "I'm a little under dressed. How about we go elsewhere?"

"Don't be silly, with that sexy little vest you have on you are dressed just fine."

"Riley you really don't have to take me to dinner."

"I know I don't, but I want to."

"How about we just go back to your place?"

Now that got Riley's attention. "How about dinner and then dessert?"

Jordan was out of options and out of time as Riley pulled her into the restaurant adjacent to the hotel. She prayed that nobody would recognize her. There were not many people who could, but she felt it would be just her luck to run into one of them. The clueless hostess led them to a table in the center of the room where all eyes could be on them.

"Why don't we sit somewhere more private? Like over there." Jordan pointed at a booth along the back wall.

"I'm sorry miss that table is reserved."

"Come on Jordan this table is just fine, sit down."

Jordan sank into the chair across from Riley. Not even Riley's beautiful smile was enough to take the edge off. The tension in her body was high because she was certain that somewhere in the building next door was Aaron Davies.

"You know I’ve never been in here before or been to the hotel, but I love the story behind the name."

"What story?" If there was a story, it was news to her.

"The story of how it came to be named Firebrand. It's a lovely story. The guy who owns it named it after his wife. It's said that he fell in love with her because she was such a firecracker. When they had children he said that she put her firebrand on them. When she died, he named it Firebrand in her honor."

Jordan had no response. Not because she already knew the story, but because she hadn't. It was so hard to think of her father having a thoughtful bone in his body and even harder to think he loved her mother enough to name his legacy after her. It was all a bit much to take.

"How do you know that?"

"Know what?"

"If the story is true, maybe it is just some stupid rumor made up by the newspapers or a PR stunt?"

"All I know is what my mom told me."

"And where did she get the information from?"

"A friend, why am I starting to feel like I’m being interrogated?"

Jordan dialed it back, "I'm sorry. I'm just intrigued."

"Intrigue sure makes you feisty. You’re a bit of a firecracker yourself, aren't you? Speaking of which didn't you called me a firecracker when you were talking to Jess?"

"Yes."

"Is that another British thing?"

No, it's an Aaron Davies thing.
