For a few minutes, Ryan sat staring at his computer screen as the weight of the knowledge he now held sunk in. What now? Finding him had been the easy part, the next bit would be the tough one. Morally, he should hand the information over instantly to the detective leading the murder inquiry, Inspector Gordon Jacobsen. His loyalty, however, was to Harrison and he knew that there were questions Harrison had for Desmond Manning which wouldn’t get answered in a police interview room. The issue was, would Harrison stop at just questions, or would the years of anger born out of trying to prove that his mother’s death wasn’t suicide, and that Desmond may well have been her killer, result in Harrison killing him himself?

He couldn’t risk that. He couldn’t put his boss in a position where he might not be able to control himself. So what should he do?

The task was made all the harder by the fact Harrison was well over two hundred miles away. Communicating with him was only possible via the phone and internet, and in situations like this, he needed to see his face and judge the look in his eyes.

He tried to think what Harrison himself would do if he was faced with such a decision. Harrison had a strong moral code, but his boss also understood that lines were sometimes fluid and every situation was unique. This situation was certainly unique!

Ryan opened another can of coke and finished off the pack of giant Wotsits he’d opened the day before. It would do for his breakfast. After an hour’s deep thinking, he realised there really was only one option, but he would have to get the timing absolutely right if it was to succeed. He was also going to need some help, along with precision planning.
